TV of Tomorrow: Fall TV Preview 2010
The CW's fall 2010 TV schedule, night by night [UPDATED]
The CW has only two new series on its fall 2010 schedule, and the network is going to make sure they get some support."Hellcats" and "Nikita" will air at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday and Thursday, which means they'll have the biggest shows on The CW as lead-ins: "America's Next Top Model" on Wednesdays and "The Vampire Diaries" on Thursdays.
The network also did some shuffling of its existing shows. "One Tree Hill" and "90210" swapped spots, and "Supernatural" will re-team with "Smallville" for an action-filled Friday lineup. "Life Unexpected" will also be back in the fall, airing after "OTH" on Tuesday nights.
The CW didn't make announce any midseason pickups at its upfront on Thursday (May 20), but news on that front could come in the next few weeks. [UPDATE: The CW later announced one midseason show -- "Shedding for the Wedding" (working title), a reality show about 10 overweight engaged couples who compete to win free elements of their wedding by dropping the pounds.]
It also announced a makeover reality series, "Plain Jane," which will air in the summer.

I am so grateful One Tree Hill is returning. That is the only series I can honestly say I would be crushed if it was cancelled. It's my guilty pleasure. Also, really glad it's coming back in the fall. With both LUX and OTH on the fall schedule, can we assume one or both will get a full season order?
I will be checking out Hellcats just because I have nothing better to watch in that time slot. Ashley Tisdale is also a plus.
I'm very excited for Nikita, being a fan of the original La Femme Nikita. Though it airs in the same slot as Grey's, I may have to watch that one online.
Why The CW waited this long to pair up 90210 and GG is beyond me. They are a much better pair than OTH/GG.
Doesn't anyone remember that La Femme Nikita was already done as a series with Peta Wildon? Oh well, the CW will probably make her a teenager in this one.
Why do the networks always try to either cancel the Best Shows, or the networks keep moving the Best Shows around, such as is being done with Supernatural? And, does anyone remember how very many times that the X-Files was moved about, during its ten year run? I understand that viewership means NOTHING to the networks. In fact, even having the richest, and highest-paying sponsors, does not save a show, nowadays. Actors salaries cannot be the cause of cancellation, since most actors, if they ask for a raise, are FIRED, on the spot. I just cannot figure out why the Better Shows end up facing cancellation, while some shows, which most people couldn't care less about, are "pumped UP", and advertised, to the max, just as the Worst Movies are. I can only figure that the networks enjoy causing viewers the pain, of losing favorite characters, just as much as Washington enjoys torturing people, at Guantanimo Bay, and Abu Ghraib. I guess that billion dollar executives enjoy watching people suffer. This is the only reason that I can think of, for cancelling these Quality Shows.
I am just SOOO THANKFUL THAT OTH IS COMING BACK!!! I MEAN THE ENDING WAS JUST OUT THERE. I LOVE THAT SHOW. I LOOK FORWARD TO WATCHING IT ON MONDAYS AFTER WORK.
Funny: You said CW had "big" shows.!! LOL ;)
CW needed, like last year, to cancel 90% of its failing lineup and start fresh.
For some reason Dawn Ostroff thinks CW only needs two new shows... This complete disconnectedness with reality is as galling as it has become tiring.
I really don't know why CBS and Warner don't pull the plug and stop losing money on an organization without a plan to succeed.
@norman: Everything on CW is low-rated and wholly deserving of cancellation as a matter of low-ratings and cost.
Dawn Ostroff just picks based on internal political factors (ie. she chooses arbitrarily).
The worst example is Gossip Girl, the show that has torpedoed CW for the past few years, that nobody watches, but is still renewed as if it were an important show to the network.
As far as costs, Hollywood actors and technicians expect raises every year a show is renewed. That made sense 20 years ago when renewal was decided based on actual success. Today, complete bombs like Gossip Girl are renewed as a mater of fact because executives don't want to admit they made a mistake. In that context, any added cost that adds to the financial hole being dug is a problem, especially that shows like Gossip Girl will not have any significant syndicated life, which is where shows make up their deficit and go into (sometimes massive) profits.
Quite honestly, this MORIBUND "network" should've folded by SUMMER '09.
Right now some of cable/satelite's best rated shows have more viewers than either CW, MyNetwork (big loser for Fox) or Univisión.
Right now National Amusements (owners of CBS and Viacom) and TWX doesn't have ANY REASON for keep this "network" on "artificial support" (TWX could accomodate some of CW's shows on TNT and NatAm on several of Viacom's extensive roster of channels [do the math]).
PULL THE PLUG AND KEEP MOVING...
I think the Cw should try and get the rights to Friday Night Lights, that would fit perfectly with the network and age groups! Just a thought!
I'm surprised that the CW doesn't pick up some cancellations from other networks that can work for their desired audience. With the potential increased boost in viewership, they may find that new shows they introduce hit better.
Rob: Yes, I for one very much recall LFN with Peta...at least, the first 4 years of it. At that point, CTV (the Canadian network that aired it) stopped doing so and since the USA network isn't available in Canada, I didn't get to see the 5th year. The big difference between that show and the new one is, according to the write-up, the new one pretty much carries on from where LFN ended. Nikita has escaped from Section One (which they are apparently now calling 'Division') and after laying low for 3 years, is now trying to bring 'Division' down.
It'll be interesting to see if Maggie Q can fill Peta's shoes in the role.
