'So You Think You Can Dance's' Nigel Lythgoe on changes: 'You have to try!'
Zap2it was invited to Ken Warwick (executive producer, "American Idol") and Nigel Lythgoe's (producer "American Idol," producer and judge, "So You Think You Can Dance") annual Wine Festival Dinner in Paso Robles, which featured several wines from their own vineyard, Villa San-Juliette.Amidst all the wonderful food and drink, we were able to catch up with Nigel on the upcoming season of "SYTYCD." The format is changing drastically for Season 7, with only 10 dancers coming out of Las Vegas and the judges actually going to the contestants' homes to tell them whether they have advanced.
"Mary Murphy has done a 'yes' and a 'no' so far," Nigel tells us. "The 'nos' are so hard, but luckily the contestants are at home, they're with their families when it happens."
"I'm only doing 'yeses,' I'm lucky," Nigel laughs. "I've done one so far, that person was so obviously a 'yes' that I couldn't even pretend they were a 'no.'"
Nigel then asked us what we thought of the changes. We told him we were excited to see the all-stars come back and that you at least have to try, even if it doesn't work.
"Exactly, you have to try!" Nigel agrees. "I was getting bored. It sounds good in theory, so hopefully it works. Before, if you had two people who couldn't do hip-hop, you had a terrible routine. Now at least you have one good person. We're very excited about the all-stars."
Finally, we had to leave Nigel so that he could give the pre-dinner welcome speech, which he ended with, "At the end of the evening, I'm sure we'll all say, '[gibberish],' after we've enjoyed the Villa San-Juliette Jack Daniels and the Villa San-Juliette tequila shots later."
The two-hour "So You Think You Can Dance" Season 7 premiere airs Thursday, May 27 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.

Problem is, they are making to many changes to fast.
a no should be given to mary murphy. her and nygel combine to give biased opinions to sway voters. really good dancers are off way before they should be.
It will be interesting to see if bringing back the "all-stars" works. First impression for me is that it's too much like Dancing with the Stars, but I'll reserve my verdict until the first couple of episodes with the top 20 airs.
I see your point TVFAN but I also think there have been times when a dancers have been stuck with partners that they didn't match up well with. I thought Molly (last season) was held back by her partner (don't remember his name). She looked so much stronger and mature once she got away from whatshisname.
Mollee was initially paired with Nathan who is great dancer when by himself but showed himself to be a poor partner. I agree that Mollee looked way better with Russell and Jakob last season although her edited pre dance footage was annoying to say the least.
Aside from one all star dancer I am keen to see how this new format pans out! I can't wait! Bring on the dancing! I love this show!
I can see your point BMAN, which is why I am reserving my verdict until I see how it works. I can see how contestants can be held back when paired with a weaker partner. I do fear that the public will vote for the "all star" instead of the contestant though. Regardless, I'm looking forward to a new season. I haven't missed one yet!
