'Hawaii Five-0': New credits, familiar theme song

hawaii-five-0-cast-320.jpgWe'll find out in the fall whether the new "Hawaii Five-0" scores with viewers, but the show has already done one smart thing: It kept the theme music.

The original "Five-0" had one of the most recognizable TV themes of all time. There was almost no way the show could not pay homage to tune, which was written by Morton Stevens -- at least not without turning off a boatload of viewers.

CBS and the show's producers knew that, and so a version of the song plays over the opening credits. It's more guitar-driven than the original (and a little bit shorter), but the series wisely didn't mess around with the music too much. In another nice touch, the credits also re-create a few of the shots from the old show -- including the push-in to McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) standing on the balcony of a high-rise building and the tracking shot of a police siren.

Have a look at the opening for the new "Hawaii Five-0" (courtesy of The Live Feed). What do you think of the cover?

I likee!

I like--in fact, I wish the opening were longer. The Ventures' hit record (from the '60s) was amazing. Book 'em, Dano!

Awful. Too high pitched and too fast compared to the original. Sounds like it was made on a Casio Keyboard.

Pleasant surprise here (well, 2 pleasant surprises - look fast for Grace Park in a bikini!). So often when they do revivals or remakes they abandon the icons. When they brought Doctor Who back they knew better then to mess with the theme. Same goes for Hawaii 5-0. I just hope the show itself doesn't end up being just a standard cop show.

I like it! Fast paced and exciting, nice lead in to what I hope is a fun 'new' show!

I love everyone in this cast except Alex O. Why oh why couldn't it have just been Scott C., DDK, and Grace Park? All well. If CBS can keep giving him a try, I guess I will too...

I like it alot. Pays homage to the original but is faster-paced. As I imagine so the show will be. Now that I've seen it, I'm kind of psyched for this show.

Meh. It sounds like it's all of 2 tracks, guitar and drums. The original had all sorts of good stuff going on behind the melody. This has none of it.

I was already anxious for the show, now I am even more. Along with some of the other posters I wish it was a little longer too.

I was prepared to hate even the concept of this show, but first they cast DD Kim, then Grace Park... and now this. Damn them, i'm doomed to watch!!!!
