'Detroit 1-8-7': Preview ABC's new mockumentary cop series

detroit-187-michael-imperioli-320.jpgFresh off the success of "Castle," ABC is once again trying its hand at a cop show with a twist.

With "Detroit 1-8-7," ABC is giving viewers a behind the scenes glimpse at the fictional group of detectives-- a la TNT's "Southland"-- in an area with the highest murder rate in the country.

"Detroit 1-8-7" stars Michael Imperioli ("The Sopranos") as Detective Louis Fitch, a homicide vet who is respected, but deeply misunderstood.

Imperioli is joined by Jon Michael Hill, James McDaniel ("NYPD Blue"), Aisha Hinds ("True Blood"), Natalie Martinez, D.J. Cotrona and Shaun Majumder.

Check out the preview clips below. Will you be watching it when it airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC?

The first new show from the next US TV season which I'm interested in seeing. I enjoyed Michael Imperiloli's episodes on Law & Order when he teamed up with Dennis Farina on the detective side of the show.

Is Detroit 1-8-7 being filmed on location in somewhere other than New York or Los Angeles?

Now if they'd only figure out that 187 is homicide only in the California penal code, not Michigan. Also Atlanta looks nothing at all like Detroit, which funnily enough has been recruiting companies to film there.

I haven't yet seen Michael Imperioli's return to Law & Order in the 16th season (one episode).

Regarding it's timeslot in the autumn, if it airs against The Good Wife and V (not sure if that has been renewed), then fingers crossed it does well in the ratings and comes second (not because I don't want to see it come first for the hour, but The Good Wife will probably win the Tuesday 10 pm timeslot easily in the autumn. That's just a guess though).

You can rest easy WaveCrest, V won't be airing opposite, since they're on the same network.

Not gonna try to front - Detroit's a mess. But it does NOT have the nation's highest murder rate, nor even the second, for the past few years. It does have one of the top violent crime rates, but that's not the same as murder. Several cities, including Trenton and Camden, NJ, Washington, DC, Baltimore, MD and St. Louis, MO have had much higher murder rates for the past few years. Please be accurate in reporting!!!

From these clips this is perhapse one of the most horible looking wana-be cop shows I have seen so far. My god people! Is this the death of network T.V? In 17 years of Law Enforcment, If I ever worked with a cop that behaved like one of these guys, I'd be in front of the Grand Jury explaining why I had to 1-8-7 him.

I do apologise Anonymous (why do people post as "Anonymous"?). I was thinking they were airing on different networks.

I think V won't be starting in the autumn, but instead mid-season. What show will NBC be airing in the Tuesdays 10 pm timeslot next season?

According to Yahoo, 25 new primetime series are debuting this fall; 7 of those are crime and legal dramas. Out of all that I have seen, this one peaks my interest most. For those wondering, all outdoor scenes for Detroit 1-8-7 were shot in Atlanta. Also, Phoenix has the highest murder rate, not Detroit. I'll be watching, though! You can count on my viewership.

The series will be filmed in Detroit. The production company has secured facilites in Highland Park, a mile square city surrounded by Detroit, for studio work. Interestingly, compaired to most city cop crime TV dramas, Detroit is mostly one & two story buildings, with a small high rise downtown and very old suburban type low density. Even housing built 90 years ago has driveways, front & back yards so the feel of the series urban geography will be much different. Also, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, is only a mile away, just across the Detroit River & part of the metropolitan area, so it offers another unique aspect to potential story lines. Gran Torino gives a good feel of Detroit's pre war urban geography.
