'Desperate Housewives': 'Ugly Betty's' Vanessa Williams on Wisteria?

"Desperate Housewives" has several vacancies to fill after this season's finale. The Bolens have moved on. And now we know that Dana Delany's pilot, "Body of Proof," has been picked up. So, Katherine's house may go up for sale. So far, they've only filled Susan's empty home with the return of baddie, Paul Young (played by Mark Moses).
And executive producer Bob Daily tells us that Moses isn't the new "Edie" they've been searching for as Zap2it first reported back in February.
"We haven't really figured out what that person is," Daily tells us. "What we're looking for is sort of a provocateur, a muckraker. We've had a couple different people filling that role over the years. When Dana Delany joined The Lane, her function was partially to sort of stir things up a little bit. I think that's really what we're looking for."
Zap2it has heard rumors that former "Ugly Betty" star Vanessa Williams was being considered for a role next season. When a casting call for an African-American mother and daughter hit the web, the rumors about Williams joining seemed plausible. Both an ABC spokesperson and Daily say that casting call is not true. That doesn't mean that Vanessa Williams isn't being considered though.
"We love Vanessa Williams and I knew her name has been floated," says Daily. "If she were available, we would certainly be interested in talking to her."
Daily goes on to say, "We haven't had a moment to really think about the new characters for next season. I think we're primarily looking for what kind of character we want to add next year. In terms of gender or age or race, we haven't thought that far yet. [Vanessa Williams] has come up, but nothing more at this point. We think she's great, but nothing more than that her name was mentioned in the writer's room."
Daily tells us that "Desperate Housewives" creator, Marc Cherry, will be having lunch with Williams soon. He stresses it's not to talk about the show, but about the legendary stage and film composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Cherry is a big fan and Williams is currently starring on Broadway in "Sondheim on Sondheim."
They probably won't talk about "Desperate Housewives" at all, right?

Vanessa Williams would be perfect on "Desperate Housewives!" Ever since Edie got killed off, the show has been missing a female villian/*****. "Ugly Betty" fans know she is capable of playing quite the trouble maker. I think she would be a great addition to the show...as long as they give her a part where her comedic talent isn't wasted. Here's hoping Marc Cherry snatches her up for "Desperate Housewive" next season...the show could use a bitchy new neighbor. She's around the same age as 3 of the main 4...and could easily be a former class mate of one of Wisteria's leading ladies.

This is a game changer for me, bringing Vanessa W. to Wisteria Lane b/c I had no intentions of watching DH again as it had gotten so stale and ONE of the last things this show needed was another baby for Lynette - where are the kids she already has in particular the youngest boy and daughter (rarely ever shown) and there are some other things that no longer made the show watchable for me and not making any sense.
Vanessa Williams would be fantastic - though they'd have to work to not make her a Wilhelmina clone. But it would strengthen the cast diversity and if they can start successfully integrating new housewives, the show can run and run...

Vanessa would be great!!! But I would love to see Pamela Anderson as Edie Britts sister come to Wisteria lane to avenge her sisters death!! hear that Marc Cherry, 2 birds with one stone.
I think for a kick, you should bring Dean Cain on for a show. He could keep saying that he know Susan from somewhere. I think it would be funny-
I have only been saying this since the day UB got cancelled..well not that day but ever since I wondered what she could do and this was deff on the list. I love DH watch since season 1 and deff getting Vanessa on the show would make me super happy and bring more diversity I mean they have Gabby and thats great but there were no blacks since the Applewhites like season 3 so this is EPIC! Oh come on like Marc Cherry and Vanessa Williams are gonna have lunch and NOT talk Desperate Housewives are you kidding me it has to come up and she should do it, the new Edie! Tho I do agree maybe not Wilhelmina Slater cuz I dont want her stuck in the same roles but a little Slater in there wouldnt hurt, anywho she would be a Great addition im down for it, time to make a facebook group me thinks!!!! lol
