'Brothers & Sisters': EP says time leap is likely for Season 5

brothers-&-sisters-abc-nora-sarah-time-jump.jpg"Brothers & Sisters" is definitely going through some growing pains.

As we reported first, Gilles Marini will return next season as a regular and Balthazar Getty may come back full-time.

Now, we learn the chances that the show will do some kind of one-year time jump next season are high.

"At this point, the odds are strong that we will do [a jump]," Executive Producer David Marshall Grant tells EW.com. "Or something like that that would shake us up in some way.

If the jump were to happen, Grant gives a couple clues as to what the reboot will look like.

  • With Rob Lowe leaving, Kitty will be single. Jumping a year probably gets us past her initial adjustment period. So when we meet up with her, she'll be single and ready to mingle.

  • Luc and Sarah will be well into their relationship, which could be interesting. In the last episode, Sarah and Luc butted heads over the "real" ramifications of the young hunk dating a woman with kids. Will he have won tween Paige over like he did young Cooper?

We've seen time jumps used before to refresh a series (such as the one on "Desperate Housewives"), but the producer says he's not afraid of the move being considered gimmicky.

"You always battle that 'it's been done before' notion," says Grant. "It's all about the execution. An idea can be interpreted as a gimmick but if it's executed in a way that creates new and exciting stories then it becomes worth it and people forget it was done a thousand times before."

[Update: An ABC spokesperson confirms to Zap2it that the time leap is one of the scenarios being considered, but no final decisions have been made about next season's storylines yet.]

I think it's a good idea. I'd enjoy what that does to the story for sure! :-)

I think B&S will actually benefit from the time jump. It'll be a nice way to refresh it. And its not a HUGE jump which is nice.
I pray it doesn't end up like Desperate Housewives, where the jump killed the series.

Time Jump = Jumping the Shark

in most cases

Time jumping over Scotty & Kevin's preparation for and the birth of their baby is offensive. Other couples on the show got episodes dedicated to preparing to be parents and the births of children.

Apparently, the gay couple doesn't rate the same treatment.

I agree with Chris. I think prioritizing Kitty and Sarah's love lives over the other characters and storylines (including Justin and Rebecca, for that matter) is offensive and needless. I don't want to miss out on the others' big moments simply for more of Kitty's Ally McBeal-style dating adventures or the Sarah/Luc Yawn-Fest. We've spent an entire season building up to this birth; we deserve to see it.

I'm opposed to a time jump on principle - lazy, uncreative, jumping the shark. Missing the lead-up and actual birth is adding insult to injury.

Well the show definitely needs a spark plug. So, if it's a time jump, then so be it. But for the sake of B&S fans, do something allready!!!Over at Desperate Housewives they've got ten different, and AMAZING stories all going on at the same time almost every week. I would stand up and shout to the rooftops, "There is a God," if B&S could pull off ONE AMAZING STORY per week instead of the current drama non-events. I feel bad for ABC when they try to advertise the exciting clips for Sunday teasers and there aren't any- LOL. Geez, get withit writers.

Re: Chris and T.

How can you make this about a gay thing. This series have been pretty open with Kevin's sexuality and he hasn't been on the back burner like so many other shows with a gay character. You're off the mark on this one.

But I do agree it does short change Kevin's and Scotty's story line.

Brother and Sisters needs more than just time travel to fix its problems.

JC, I disagree entirely. The show has always claimed to treat the gay characters equally. Any person with simple observation skills can tell that's not the case.
Kitty and Robert were engaged for quite some time as they planned for their fairy tale wedding. They even had a second wedding/vow renewal. The birth of their son, after a season-plus of build-up was the focus of a major two-part episode. Elizabeth's birth also had an entire episode devoted to it.
Justin and Rebecca had, arguably, three proposal scenes and two wedding episodes. Just about every episode last season started and ended with them either making up or making out.
Kevin and Scotty went from roommates to boyfriends in the course of something like 2 episodes. There was ONE episode for their engagement and wedding (officiated by Kitty who turned the entire thing into a speech about herself). This baby storyline is the first one they've had that's actually been developed and has lasted for more than a single episode.

Now it's going to be passed over in order to get Kitty dating again and to establish Sarah/Luc in a relationship. Kevin/Scotty's storyline is the only one that would be hard-hit by a time-jump. So all I see is the gay couple getting sidelined for the straight characters' love lives.

And for that matter, the birth is my main priority, but it's not the only one. As much as I dislike Robert, I would like to see how Kitty deals with whatever happens to him. She'll be a single mother to a very young child dealing with some kind of loss. Should her dating REALLY be the focus of her storyline, at least at the beginning of the storyline?

I love Justin's current SL and can't wait to see what he ends up doing. A year from now he'll presumably be working at something that we have no emotional connection to, since we probably won't see him decide on it or work towards it.

All in all, there are far too many crucial, character-based moments and plots that I don't want to miss.
