Box Office: 'Shrek Forever After' wins, but the numbers disappoint

"Shrek Forever After," billed as the last installment in the franchise, took the top spot at the box office this weekend, as expected. However, with just $71.3 million made, it's seen as a disappointment.

The second and third "Shrek" movies opened with $108 million and $121 million, respectively. Because "Shrek Forever After" is a 3-D movie, tickets sell for as much as $20 in some theaters, so numbers were expected to be much higher. Has "Shrek" run its course?

The weekend's other new release, "MacGruber," bombed significantly, making only $4.1 million in 2500 theaters despite good reviews and a big marketing campaign.

The top ten grossing films of the weekend are as follows:

  1. "Shrek Forever After" - $71.3 million
  2. "Iron Man 2" - $26.6 million
  3. "Robin Hood" - $18.7 million
  4. "Letters to Juliet" - $9.1 million
  5. "Just Wright" - $4.2 million
  6. "MacGruber" - $4.1 million
  7. "Date Night" - $2.8 million
  8. "A Nightmare on Elm Street" - $2.2 million
  9. "How to Train Your Dragon" - $1.8 million
  10. "Kites" - $953,000

It didnt do bad because its another Shrek movie. People love shrek and want to go see it. It didnt do good because tickets are ridiculous! Families cant afford to go see a movie in 3D because its too expensive. I mean honestly, were in the middle of a recession? I wish movie studios would realize that.

True and the reviews are horrible, it is basically a rehash of the first movie and the 3d elements add nothing to the movie. If you are going to pay less then $10 for the movie ($8 for 3d and $5 for a regular show) I would still say don't go see this and waste your time and money. Wait for the dvd near Christmas time for less than $20.

I went and saw it for 10 bucks at a legit imax theater not one thats only a couple feet bigger than the regular screens. It was meh to me. The first one was better but this one wasnt terrible it was worth the ten bucks for the imax 3d stuff.

Shoot, B, you can rent the Shrek 4 DVD for a lot less than $20.

And as far as MacGruber, Zap2it writer, what "good reviews"? It's at 53% at Rotten Tomatoes, with only a 25% rating among their Top Critics.

That's green splatter time, dudette.
