'Box Office': 'Prince' might jump 'Sex' for second place

prince-of-persia-320.jpgThe box office estimates for the four-day Memorial Day weekend have "Shrek Forever After" firmly in first place, but "Sex and the City 2's" momentum may have slowed enough to let "Prince of Persia" jump over it for a second-place finish.

We won't know anything for sure until the final numbers are in, but estimates have "Shrek" at $55.6 million, a significant increase over Sunday's three-day estimates and easily good for the top weekend movie. "Prince of Persia's" $37.8 million in estimated earnings just eke it past "Sex and the City 2," which is estimated to be at $37.1 million.

The rest of the top 12 stayed the same as on Sunday, May 30. The first number is each movie's weekend take, the second number is the overall earnings:

1. "Shrek Forever After"                $55,600,000, $145,350,000
2. "Prince of Persia"                     $37,779,000, $37,779,000
3. "Sex and the City 2"                 $37,145,000, $51,353,000
4. "Iron Man 2"                             $20,250,000, $278,827,000
5. "Robin Hood"                           $13,576,325, $86,296,190
6. "Letters to Juliet"                      $7,250,000, $37,953,418
7. "Just Wright"                            $2,700,000, $18,697,518
8. "Date Night"                             $2,250,000, $93,947,708
9. "MacGruber"                             $1,947,690, $7,598,025
10. "How to Train Your Dragon"      $1,425,000, $213,029,000
11. "A Nightmare on Elm Street"    $1,145,000, $61,924,000
12. "Alice in Wonderland"              $673,000, $333,104,000

It seems that this year it has been the movies that analysts have written off for dead or as "disappointments" are the ones that receive the highest exit polling scores, garner the most positive word of mouth from theater patrons, and have the strongest box office legs. A Fifty-six million dollar 2nd weekend behind a seventy million dollar opener is amazing. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Shrek Forever After cross or come close to the 200 milliion dollar mark this weekend.
