Box Office: Kiddies trump cougars as 'Shrek' wins Memorial Day weekend
Despite winning Friday, "Sex and the City 2" couldn't compete with Memorial Day weekend family trips to the cinema, as "Shrek Forever After" will take the weekend with an estimated $43.3 million in earnings. That gives "Shrek" its second weekend win in a row and brings its domestic total to $133.1 million."Sex" came in second with just over $32 million, which brings its total so far to $46.3 million -- well below its predecessor's opening weekend take of $56.8 million two years ago. The action adventure "Prince of Persia" came in third at just over $30 million.
"Iron Man 2" still managed a respectable $16 million take, bringing its domestic total to $274.6 million after four weeks in the theaters. "Robin Hood" rounded out the top 5 with $10.3 million, which brings its total to $83 million after three weeks.
In another display of family fare ruling Memorial Day, "A Nnightmare on Elm Street" was bumped from the box office top 10 by "How to Train Your Dragon," despite being No. 10 after Friday night's take. And "Alice in Wonderland" is hanging right in there after 13 weeks in the theaters. It took in over half a million this weekend and its total box office earnings are almost at $333 million.

Seems VERY pointless to post this article given that there's still all day tomorrow to factor into the holiday weekend. I saw Sex and the City 2 last night and it was just blah. I'm a huge fan of the show and the first movie, but this installment just wasn't up to par. Thevman candy left nothing to be desired, however. Woulda been nice to see Gille Marini make a cameo since Samantha could do anything she wanted to him now that her and Smith are dunzo. If there is a third, I'm sure Samantha and Smith will tie the knot. It's the only place left they can go.
Shrek Forever After came back and blew the doors off the competition. Really, other than Shrek, and Iron Man 2, the month of May has been much of a box office race. Sex and The City 2 crashed and burned after getting out to a fast start. Prince of Persia got four flat tires on day one. And Robin Hood jackknifed in dullsville. Will it get worse before it gets better? Probably. No great expectations for the schlock coming out next weekend either!
