'Big Brother' vs. 'Survivor': Zap2it's Reality TV Smackdown

julie-chen-jeff-probst.jpgThe 20th season of "Survivor" is about to come to a close, while the 12th season of "Big Brother" kicks off in just a few short months. So Zap2it is doing another TV Smackdown, reality show-style. Our smackdowns, which started with a epic battle between "Bones" and "Castle," pit two TV series with similar styles against each other in a series of totally objective and scientific absolutely subjective and arbitrary tests to see how they stack up.

"Survivor" and "Big Brother" are known for demanding challenges, scheming, lying, backstabbing, blindsides and characters that range from nutjobs to masterminds. But which show comes out on top? It may be a closer race than you think.

So who wins? You'll have to check out our "Survivor" vs. "Big Brother" gallery to find out, but we want to hear your opinions below. Which reality TV show wins in your smackdown?

I love both shows, but something about Big Brother is just so captivating. Perhaps it's the live aspect, or that it's on more during the week (or less during the year)

Big Brother and Survivor are not similar shows in my mind. Big Brother puts a bunch of people (nearly all obnoxious) in a house together and gives them nothing to do for several months.
Survivor puts a bunch of people in an interesting setting, has real challenges, and is a genre unique to T.V. Survivor might be like Big Brother if they showed 3 hours of it a week.
Compare Big Brother to Biggest Loser. You can decide which show has more stupid filler.

BIG BROTHER ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

BIG BROTHER!!! If you're not familiar with it and always wonder why people like it so much...watch the houseguests on Showtime After Dark...it will get you to watch too. Survivor needs to be retired!

CBS should do a reality show mash-up former Survivor players thrown into the BIG Brother house and former Big Brother players thrown onto a Island

Oh, for the love of God! How stupid can one get, trying to compare 'Big Brother' to 'Survivor'? This idiotic quote from the gallery says it all:

"The premise of the shows is the same -- both shows consist of a group of contestants in a remote location ..."

Sorry, but the premise of the shows is *not* the same. The only thing they have in common is they both have a bunch of contestants competing for money. As for differences, for starters, the "remote location" for 'Big Brothers' is LA. Ooooh, scary! Ooooh, dangerous! 'Survivor', OTOH, is set in the wild, surrounded by animals that would just as soon kill and eat the contestants as look at them.

Even the money is different...and is appropriate to the toughness of the competition. The winner of the lameness that is 'BB' gets an equally lame couple of hundred thousand dollars. But the sole survivor of 'Survivor' gets a well-earned million dollars.

'BB' contestants live in relative luxury, with beds, pillows, clean clothes, clean bedding, showers, bathrooms, washers and dryers, food and even a pool. 'Survior' only has *some* of those things for *one* reward challenge...the rest of the time the contestants are expected to survive (hence the name of the show) on what's around them.

And most importantly, 'Survivor' has what can be considered *normal* people as contestants...no contestant has held a knife to another contestant's throat and threatened to kill her. Can't say the same about 'BB' - literally. Over the years, they've had many psycho's and criminals as contestants.

A better comparison might have been 'Survivor' and 'The Amazing Race'. At least on 'TAR', the contestants have to use their wits and intelligence, and overcome complex obstacles such as language differences, in order to complete the tasks. 'BB' is a prime example of a "reality" show that sucks.

I love Survivor and Amazing Race equally. Big Brother has been lacking the past few seasons for me. But nothing compares to Big Brother UK though. The British version is totally enthralling. Go take a peek at series 7 & 8 of BB UK on YouTube. The celebrity version of BB UK is pretty nuts. Hello! Jackie Stallone and Brigitte Nielsen living in a house together?! Or how about Dennis Rodman, Traci Bingham and 80s singer Pete Burns from Dead or Alive hanging out?!... That alone should make anyone wanna check out those video as well on YouTube.

I like both shows...but the contestants on Big Brother have it easy, compare to those on Survivor.

while Survivor has easily had it's best season ever this year, BIG BROTHER!! LOVE, LOVE it!

It's apples and oranges. Survivor has a much higher profile and a clearer legacy, while BB's reputation fluctuates from season to season. Seasons 7 (All-Stars), 8 and 10 were great, while all copies of Seasons 9 and 11 should be burned, or deleted from all hard drives.

But I get more engrossed in a good season of Big Brother than I do with Survivor. I watch the live feeds, post on blogs, the whole enchilada. With Survivor, I just watch it on TV occasionally. Big Brother wins for me.
