'American Idol': Why was David Cook missing from the season finale?

david-cook-getty.jpgFor those hoping for some juicy, scandalous reason behind the absence of Season 7 "American Idol" winner David Cook from Wednesday's (May 26) finale, prepare to be disappointed.

Cook couldn't join all his fellow "Idol" winners on stage for a Simon Cowell send off number because he had a charity event in Kansas City, his rep told Access Hollywood.

After Lee DeWyze was declared Season 9's "Idol" champion, Cook tweeted:

Congrats to Lee Dewyze! So sorry I could be there to see all my fellow idols. I'm there in spirit!

He immediately followed that up with:

Lol sorry. Couldn't, not could. Predictive text wins again

Another popular "Idol" who was conspicuously missing from the finale does have a somewhat scandalous story behind his absence. Earlier today, Zap2it reported that Adam Lambert didn't show up for his finale rehearsal, which got his scheduled "surprise" performance axed from the show.

Wow, that totally sounds like something he would do. David Cook constantly puts others before himself, even foregoing the amazing publicity of being on Idol for a charity for cancer stricken kids. It would have been great to see him on the Finale but I do respect his character and values. Amazing.

Good for Cook! I respect a performer who keeps his charity commitments in preference to nabbing more camera time.

David Cooks priorities and heart have no bounds!
He is the true definition of an "American Idol".
So very much, missed seeing him though!

David Cook should have been at the finale. I respect the commitment to appear at a charity event, but if it weren't for Idol there would be NO David Cook. He does owe his career and popularity to the show that gave him his platform and the respect to show up and honor the show's creator in his final farewell.

I saw David Cook at a Daughtry/Lifehouse concert last night, sitting like two rows back from me. It was awesome.

Avabelle, Simon Cowell is not the show's creator. You're thinking of Simon Fuller. After appearing twice on this year's AI, I'm sure DC has said his respects and wished Simon C well in advance of his final night knowing he had a prior engagement that was more humanitarian then being a face in the crowd of people on stage. I bet if one were to ask Simon where he'd rather Cook to be, he would have encouraged the charity event.

I bet that if David Cook asked Simon if he would like him to cancel his charity appearance in order to be part of the tribute, Simon would have said no.

That's ridiculous, David was right where he needed to be and should have been. I would have been disappointed in him if he cancelled on those kids. Shame on you for evening thinking that!

I was shocked when DC didn't come out on stage - my family was cracking up because they knew I still (after 2 years) loved loved loved seeing him! He is one of the more popular idols and always welcomed back so I was really surprised that he wasn't there - the only reason I tuned in at all this year was in hopes of seeing him and I got lucky twice. I knew he must have some other pressing engagement. What a great guy - so intelligent, well-spoken and caring, oh and cute - did I forget to mention that?
