'American Idol' viewers can voice their displeasure in an official survey

american-idol-judges-320-2.jpgIs the "American Idol" machine a little worried? Between popular judge Simon Cowell's impending departure and new show "The X Factor," the declining ratings and the overall lukewarm reception the Season 9 contestants have been receiving, perhaps it's time for "Idol" to regroup.

The official site has now put forth a survey for viewers to voice their opinions. It is actually quite illuminating, particularly the questions comparing this season to the 2009 season, rating the current judges and asking about former judge Paula Abdul.

The survey includes:

  • A section about asking how many times In the last three months you have watched "American Idol" and asking you to rate your enjoyment of it on a scale of 1 to 10.

  • A section asking how much of a reason are each of the following for watching "American Idol" and then listing things like: the quality of the contestants, the overall concept of the show, the personality of the contestants, Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, Ellen DeGeneres, Randy Jackson, Ryan Seacrest, the banter between Ryan and the judges, the mentors, unpredictability of voting and the judges "Save."

  • A section asking if you are watching Season 10 more or less than Season 9 and why, then listing factors such as: the contestants are better, I like the show more now that Paula Abdul is no longer a judge, I like Ellen DeGeneres on the show, I agree with the eliminations so far and people are talking about American Idol more or the talent is worse, the themes are generally boring, I do not like the show as much now that Paula Abdul has left, I do not like Ellen DeGeneres on the show, people are talking about American Idol less, I am getting bored by the show and the contestants eliminated so far do not make sense.

  • A section asking if you watch it live, recorded but on the same night or recorded and on a later night.

  • A section asking you to rate the guest judges from the auditions rounds.

  • A section asking you to rate the judges, Ryan Seacrest and how much you miss Paula and if you'd like to see her return to the show.

  • A section asking you to rate the mentors and offer suggestions of mentors you'd like to see on the show.

All in all, it's an interesting survey. We can't remember another time when the show has done this and we can't help but think it's the show's attempt to stave off its complete demise with all the challenges it's facing.

The question is -- what will the show actually do with the survey results? Also, how reliable can a survey at the official site be? Aren't the people who would take the time and effort to visit the official "American Idol" site, let alone take the time to fill out a survey, the ones less likely to provide the constructive criticism the show needs?

I stopped watching Idol on a regular basis about 3 seasons ago when Melinda didnt even get to the finals. That convinced me the show was not legit. And this year I peeked in at the odd show and this is the worst year ever for talent. It really doesnt matter who wins - they are all about the same calibre - lousy. I think it is time to pack it in - go out while you are still sort of on top Idol. You have had a good run but look at last years winner - well I would if I could find him - all I see is Adam Lambert. Too many people have won that never should have won.

everything and everyone is lousy from the judges to the host to the contestants... ellen degeneres is such a lame judge - she has no business sitting there... randy, well as always he is invisible.. nobody listens to him anyway.. kara is annoying.. simon, well he just wants to annoy kara.... seacrest is acting weird... and this is the worst group of contestants... big mike- has an ok voice but does not have the star factor(he looks like a singing tree trunk).. lee??? great voice but lacks personality (always staring blankly at the audience - no connection there)... casey - good voice but he's better off to be a a calvin klein underwear model... crysta??? the most overrated idol contestant of all seasons... she can sing, cry and play guitar... i stopped watching it 2 weeks ago anyway... would rather see dancing with the stars... because even the judges are entertaining

oh boy, i really did express my displeasure in that survey. the ship started sinking in season 6 then when siobhan got kick out of the competition, american idol starts drowning. this is so good.

AI tried fixing something that wasn't broke. They added whatshername. Suddenly Paula's out & Ellens in & Simons leaving. No one's getting fat except mama Seacrest.

Obviously the execs haven't
figured out why the shows ratings are declining every single week. Its because like
Simon, we just don't care anymore.

Two reasons I no longer watch, neither of which the poll addressed:

1. Non-Idol singers on the results shows.

The most important promotion American Idol can offer any artist is a chance to sing in front of its huge audience.

Whenever they bring on a non-Idol instead of a former Idol contestant, they're essentially telling everyone who ever supported one of their former Idol contestants by buying concert tickets, CDs, etc., THEY DON'T RESPECT US.

The only way to return the favor is by not watching.

2. The voting system is horribly flawed. This could have been a good season if the teeny-boppers didn't control the system. It was pretty clear early on that all the talent was on the female side, but they're all gone except for Crystal because the teen queens are all voting for the boring but cute guys like Casey.

The show will never be the same without Paula and most definitely not without Simon. The singers this season just don't have the same talent as in the past either. Don't know what the Judges were looking at. Either they can sing and have no personality or vice versa. Need to change the voting. Vote for the worst, not the best or something.

JMO, but this is the WORST season ever. The show has lost its lustre, free passes to contestants who should have been eliminated long time ago. I dearly miss Paula she was an intrical part of this show. I miss her and Simon's bantering, and I detest having four judges, especially Kara.

Simon plays an integral part on this show, without him or Paul the show is absolutely worthless. It certainly has proved the latter this season.

Took the survey....Great idea!!! I voted for Ellen to be out.....
