'American Idol': 'Up to the Mountain' raises Crystal Bowersox

up-to-the-mountain-crystal-bowersox-video-320.jpgCrystal Bowersox blew many fans away with the third song she delivered Tuesday night (May 25), giving her best bid for the title of "American Idol."

"Up to the Mountain" will be her first single released if she wins, but we wouldn't be surprised if it still did well if she lost.

The song was originally written by Patty Griffin about Martin Luther King, Jr.'s moving "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech he delivered the day he was assassinated. Here's a sample of the lyrics:

Some days I look down
Afraid I will fall
And though the sun shines
I see nothing at all

The song suits Bowersox's soulful, almost gospel-y singing style and may have tipped the scales in her favor -- that is, if the competition by now were about pure performance over personal preference.

Check out Mamasox, bringing it home:

She also sang another rousing rendition of "Me and Bobby McGee" and a so-so "Black Velvet." Check out Zap2it's recap of her and Lee DeWyze's final competition performances.

Kelly Clarkson performed it better on Idol Gives Back a couple years ago...Go check that out.

I agree, if it was about who sang better last night, its Crystal's without a doubt. Lee's best song was his first and it never got any better. But since this is more a popularity competition, rather then an actual talent competition I am afraid that Lee may still win it.

"Up to the Mountain" was a show stopping performance by Crystal. What an amazing talent. Good luck Mamasox, I hope you win it all.

Sounds great and she'll become a good artist. But Lee will definitely win! Opinions: http://j.mp/up-to-the-mountain-opinions

This song tells a story about struggle and perseverance. Kelly's version takes you along on her journey; great story telling.

Crystal's version sounded disjointed to me - the beauty of the lyrics was drowned by too many unnecessary loud riffs. Didn't like her interpretation nearly as much, which is unusual because she typically nails it with these types of songs.

With that said, Crystal for the win tonight!
