'American Idol': Top 3 judges' choice songs announced

The Top 3 take on songs the "American Idol" judges choose for them and the announcements have been made on the Friday, May 14 hometown visits.Ellen DeGeneres chose "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul McCartney for Crystal Bowersox. Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson chose "Daughters" by John Mayer for Casey James. Simon Cowell chose "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen for Lee Dewyze.
Interesting. We find this to be kind of weird for several reasons. First, Ellen picking for Crystal is a surprise. Simon has been her champion all season long, so we just assumed he'd get her. Simon also usually chooses the song of the eventual winner, so maybe this tells us something about the voting totals?
Secondly, we are surprised newbie judge Ellen wasn't paired with Randy, letting Kara pick on her own. But maybe Kara picking for Casey James was just feeding too much into the weird cougar storyline going on with them.
Finally, we are very surprised Simon chose "Hallelujah" for Lee Dewyze. Not that it's a bad song. On the contrary, it's a great song and Lee will probably do it very well. But Tim Urban did it just a few short weeks ago and it's strange Simon would pick a repeat.

I'm so sick of Hallelujah
Simon didnt pick for Carrie on Season 4 either, Randy did. Biggest WTF at Hallelujah for Lee though? And Maybe Im Amazed for Crystal? Seriously Ellen? Good song for Casey though.
That's a weird choice from Simon. We just heard that song and Tim wasn't half bad.
Maybe Simon is secretly sabotaging Lee because he still wants Crystal to win. Like his double-secret-backwards-Voodoo curse of choosing for Lee instead of her. : )
I am surprised that Simon chose a song for Lee. I would have thought he would be in charge of Crystal because Idol would most likely want her as the eventual winner. And Hallelujah again? It's not a surprising choice from Simon though because it is one of his favorite songs of all time and it was the winning song for the X Factor (in UK) two years ago. Anyway, I hope Lee wins.

Hallelujah is a tough song to mess up. Lee has a REALLY hard time singing on key. Ergo, throw the sucker an easy pitch. Might backfire on him, though. Not gonna erase the memory of last weeks off-key disaster.
Simon may be doing far more to guarantee a Crystal win with his song choice for Lee than he could ever have done by picking a song for Crystal.
Interesting song choices for the three, but a song that's already beend done this season is really strange. Simon picking Hallelujah for Lee is most strange. I hope Crystal wins and I can't wait to hear her spin on "Maybe I'm Amazed". Based on voting demographics, as much as I want Crystal to take the season 9 AI title, I think it will be a Lee-Casey final(sob!). I've got to go with reality here. Both Casey and Lee come from cities and states with large populations and they will get all the teen girl votes. I'm not holding out much luck for Crystal to make the final, but top-3 is really good for a Janis Joplin-bluesy singer type for a pop show like AI.
Simon does not always choose the eventual winnner's song. I recall he picked for Vonzell, and that choice was a lame one. It didn't showcase her at all. Even though she probably wasn't going to win, it was still a bad choice.
