'The Office': Steve Carell looking for a new job?

steve-carell-the-office-320.jpgDunder Mifflin Scranton may be on the hunt for a new manager this time next year.

Steve Carell, who's played Michael Scott on "The Office" for the past six seasons, says that the 2010-11 season will "probably" be his last on the show. In a BBC radio interview with his "Date Night" co-star Tina Fey (which Office Tally picked up; it also has audio of the interview), he notes that his contract runs out next season. Here's the full exchange:

Interviewer: How long will you stay with 'The Office' for? How many more series? How long does your contract run?
Carell: Contract through next season.
Interviewer: And will you stay after that?
Carell: I don't think so. I think that will probably be my last year.

That's potentially huge news for the show, which is NBC's second-highest-rated series (after "Sunday Night Football") among adults 18-49; it's averaging a 4.6 rating in the demographic this season, which places it in the Top 20 among all shows, and just under 9 million viewers per week, the most by far of anything in NBC's Thursday lineup.

Do you think "The Office" could go on without Steve Carell? Vote in the poll below.

I think replacing him with Gervais would be a stroke of genius. Otherwise, cancel the show.

They could replace him with...Ricky Gervais!

Nope. The show is done!

imo he is the WORSE part of the show esp lately he is just hard to watch...Jim or Dwight taking over for him would be more then fine

I'm ready to say goodbye to the show. I've loved it for years, but the magic is gone.

I agree with C. I love the show but it's past its prime. The comedy has just fizzled out.

I love the office but i think its time to let it go after next season. No Michael No Show!!

i think they have done enough with the other characters to carry on without Steve. They could elevate Dwight, Ryan, Andy, or hopefully Stanley or Creede!

To me the show has been waiting to evolve past his character for at least three seasons. Within the progression of the show, it seems natural. The Office has done a good job of casting to this point. I believe that you could do some interesting arcs that ultimately lead to a new series regular who plays a prominent role in show and helps it evolve into something superior to what it is. The show has gotten mildly repetitive the last couple of seasons. Letting him go would open it up to explore other directions. This show could become so much better if Steve leaves. He took it as far as he could, now it is time to let someone else come in and take it to a new place.

anybody who doesn't see this as a ploy for "SHOW ME THE MONEY" is silly....he'll be back, and be paid$$$$$$$$.

But I have to say, I like the idea of Ricky Gervais.
