'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' Season 2 postponed, possible prequel in the works

spartacus-season2.jpgThe April 16 Season 1 finale of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" is the last we'll see of the Starz! show for a while.

Lead actor Andy Whitfield was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and since the series can't continue without Spartacus himself, production of Season 2 has been delayed indefinitely.

Staff writer Maurissa Tancharoe, confirms via Twitter: "The second season is still happening, however, it is on hold at the moment due to star Andy Whitfield's health problems." She repeated her sentiment later, assuring fans that the show has not been canceled.

NY Magazine reports that in order to utilize the sets, actors, and writers standing by, Starz is developing a prequel series. A younger actor could replace Whitfield, keeping audiences interested until Whitfield can return for Season 2. There's no word yet on whether co-stars like Lucy Lawless and John Hannah would be involved in the prequel.

Ande Cunningham, Duro, the younger of the two German brothers, tells Zap2it his feelings about a possible prequel and what it's like to go through the rigorous training for the show.

UPDATE: WHITFIELD IS CANCER-FREE, IN TRAINING FOR SEASON 2.

I hope Whitfield gets better, not only do i love the show, but he is a great actor and entertainer

This has to be the best television show ever produced! The Shakesperian undertones, the story lines second to none! This show could teach others a lesson in the fact they don't drag story lines out, they give you a full plate every episode. Get well soon Andy, this show needs you!

I just have to say this was the best show ive seen in a long time I loved everything about it. cant wait for season 2 Spartacus is amazing.

love the show! andy you best get better man. ur spartacus

Spartacas portrays a 21st century Shakespearean gladiator drama set in Roman times. I absolutely love this show, the dialogue, drama, suspense, and no regard for putting any character on a pedestal. No character is safe from being killed off and that is so refreshing because we have no idea what can happen next. The boundaries that the show is crossing is transcendental and the extreme nature of the show's content provides an intriguing picture of the period of time. This really is the best show I have seen since the Sopranos. I hope Andy Whitfield recovers and Season 2 continues. I foresee Legatus and Olithia replacing the major role that the House of Batiatus fulfilled. There is no direction this show cannot follow. Big thanks to the writers for the originality, consistency, and quality of dialogue.

get well soon andy

Seriously, this show was amazing. They didnt drag anything out at all. Unlike every other television show that leaves you with stupid cliff-hangers to force you to watch the next episode, Spartacus gives you what you want to see, possibly more, every time.

Omg! I loved everything about the show. It always had me wanting more. Great show! Great cast! Great series. My Hats off to the writers. Amazing!! I want action figures...

Andy Whitfield please get better soon! I pray for your health to return so you may continue your role as "SPARTACUS" I'm so hooked on this show . . .

This show is off the charts! The best show I've seen in years. I hope Andy Whitfield gets well soon.
