Report: J.J. Abrams-Steven Spielberg collaboration in the works

jj-abrams-steven-spielberg-gi-320.jpgJ.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg, two of Hollywood's most beloved creative minds, may be teaming up.

Abrams, who recently was helmsman on the "Star Trek" reboot, is going to make his next silver screen project a Spielberg tribute and collaboration, so says Vulture.

Details are hazy, as is studio confirmation. The report claims that the film will be in the vein of Spielberg's most successful '70s and '80s films, where ordinary folk encounter extraordinary circumstances, possibly fantastical/science fictional.

Spielberg's involvement seems assured since "J.J. wants to make sure Steven is properly paid homage to. This is really an interpretation of some of Spielberg's earlier films, but done in a personal way." No title, working or otherwise, has been released yet, much like the mystery that surrounded "Cloverfield."

Although we don't doubt that such a partnership could happen, Abrams would have to work hard to fit this in his schedule. It's a good thing "Lost" is ending on ABC, but "Fringe" on FOX is still going strong, and he has that NBC "Undercovers" pilot in the works.

On the big screen, he's producing "Mission: Impossible 4" and a Rachel McAdams comedy, along with developing a ton of other film projects such as the sequels to "Cloverfield" and "Star Trek."

Spielberg has been wearing the executive producer hat for a while, so it would be quite fitting if he did the same for this project. As for directing, he still has "The Adventures of Tintin" coming.

Abrams has said repeatedly that his involvement with Lost has been minimal to non-existent for years. At least once it ends this year, dumb writers can stop referencing it as a reason for him moving slowly on projects.

He was even working on a rehash of invisible man during that last spank.

I see somebody already beat me to it, but I also felt compelled to post a comment when, once again, some hack internet TV reporter makes a statement that implies that JJ is heavily involved in LOST, when in fact he has had no involvement since the pilot SIX YEARS ago!!!

It's bad enough I have to keep on telling friends and relatives (who don't watch LOST) this (to explain why, no I don't go to Star Trek or Mission Impossible or any other movie "even though JJ is involved!"), but I expect more from "professional" TV journalists.

I guess that makes either me -- or Nguyen -- an idiot.

Spielberg's creativity died a long time ago. . . stay in the exec producer role for all our sake

Sloppy, sloppy writing.

It's obvious J.J Abrams isn't involved with LOST! That show sucks so badly I can't wait until something worthwhile fills that timeslot.

If you don't like LOST, penny, I'm sure you love JJ's endless remakes of already famous movies. Sad that capitalizing on other people's creativity is now considered being "one of Hollywood's most beloved creative minds."
