'Psych': The April Fool's Day Twitter joke explained
Fans who follow the "Psych" writers on Twitter got a shock on April Fool's Day when suddenly their feed was changed to "@mentalistwrites" and the tweets focused on the CBS series which some may feel kinda sorta stole "Psych's" premise.Personally, Korbi TV thought it was a brilliant prank, considering the, uh, similarities between the two shows. We caught up with Brittany Hilgers -- who runs @psychwrites -- at a recent Paley Center event honoring "Psych" and got the lowdown on what inspired the April 1st joke.
"One of our old assistants who worked with us, he kind of had the idea and he approached me outside of the office and he was like, hey, let's do this [prank]," Hilgers tells Korbi TV. "And I'm like, okay, let's do this. and so we just changed the account name and went for it and it just panned out. It was awesome."
"People were so, so fooled," she says. "We ended up losing about 400 followers at first because they thought we were really 'The Mentalist' writers...we didn't expect how awesome it ended up being."

Why do Psych and The Mentalist have to be at odds? I don't get it. Both are very well acted. Psych has more madcap fun with situations, Mentalist is more a well crafted traditional mystery series. Production values are terrific on both. They have in common a light touch that makes them fun to watch. I don't get the problem.
Why do the Mentalist and Psych always get compared? There are only so many premises out there that people will want to watch-some are going to be similar. Get over it. They are both really good shows. No one is stealing anything. If you want to look at stealing, take a look at the Belarus comedy "The Theorists". They stole The Big Bang Theory from us.
People need to stop comparing these shows. The motivation behind the lead characters is completely different. Shawn Spencer is pretending to be a psychic to use his detective skills, impress his dad, and get paid. Patrick Jane is a law enforcement consultant because his wife and child were murdered by a serial killer. They are both great shows for different reasons. Psych is hilarious and the Mentalist is incredibly smart. I would actually say that Patrick is a little more like Monk than Shawn.
