'Parenthood' picked up for 2010-11
One more show off the bubble: NBC has renewed its freshman drama "Parenthood" for next season. The network announced Tuesday (April 20) that the well-reviewed series, which has drawn decent if unspectacular ratings since its March premiere, will be back for 2010-11. It joins the network's Thursday comedy block in the safe column.
"We are so happy to welcome back this multi-layered and compelling series about an extended American family for another season," NBC Entertainment president Angela Bromstad says. "It's gratifying that 'Parenthood' continues to garner critical acclaim and is generating highly positive reaction from viewers, thanks to the fearless creativity of its producers and the extraordinary performances delivered by its ensemble cast."
So far this season "Parenthood" is averaging 7.8 million viewers per week and a respectable 3.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, which is NBC's primary ratings measuring stick. Both numbers are solid improvements over the Tuesday edition of "The Jay Leno Show" (6.3 million viewers, 2.0 in 18-49) that aired in the 10 p.m. timeslot earlier in the season.
It's also a pretty heavily DVR'ed show -- through April 4, the last week for which figures are available, it's added an average of 1.76 million viewers per week and nine-tenths of a point in the demo ratings.
"Parenthood" star Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Monica Potter, Erika Christensen, Dax Shepard, Sam Jaeger, Joy Bryant, Mae Whitman, Sarah Ramos, Miles Heizer, Savannah Rae and Max Burkholder. It's based on Ron Howard's 1989 movie (he's an executive producer of the show) and was created by Jason Katims ("Friday Night Lights").

Heroes > Chuck
Why this and not CHUCK! CHUCK! CHUCK! CHUCK!
Bromstad can put all the spin she wants on this (She's a Zucker stooge, by the way), if it wasn't for Lauren Graham, this show would nothing more than time filler on a network desperate for a hit.
CHUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!CHUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!CHUCK!!!!!!!!!! come on NBC wake up and smell the subway sandwiches, we want more Chuck (sarah, casey, morgan, ellie, awesome.....)
This is a good show that has tough competition from The Good Wife that was already established as a winner. I'm glad to know they are supporting it. Maybe it will get a better time slot in the fall. I think it would do well against one of the CSI spin-offs or The Mentalist. I also agree with the Chuck fans. I'd like to see Chuck back too.
I'm not surprised that Parenthood has been renewed but I am surprised how decent it did in the 10pm timeslot. It was destined to be in an earlier timeslot had Jay Leno not fallen so hard on his chin. And I agree that a fourth season of Chuck needs to happen.
