'One Shining Moment' 2010: 'American Idol' Jennifer Hudson sings for new montage
The Duke vs. Butler game was a pretty darn good finale to a great NCAA tournament, but how did CBS do? The "One Shining Moment" championship montage that's traditionally played as the winning team cuts down the nets aired Monday night (April 5) to mixed response, much of it negative.
Yes, Jennifer Hudson sang the new version of the song, which was originated by David Barrett and then taken up by Teddy Pendergrass and then Luther Vandross in subsequent years. Traditionalists miss those renditions, and there's nothing that can really be done unless someone has zombie Vandross or Pendergrass tucked away in their basements.
The bigger issue, however, was the montage itself. Not only did key highlights appear to be missing (Evan Turner, Ohio-Georgetown, etc.) but there were at least five music video-style shots of the "American Idol" finalist. How is J-Hud a highlight of the tourney?
See for yourself.
What's your take on the new "One Shining Moment"? What was left out?

this version is awful. luther is probably spinning in his grave after hearing/watching that. cbs has always done things with class and professionalism, but this was awful. i cannot stress enough how bad it was. what was cbs thinking? did they really think it was good, or that people would like it? wow, still baffles me.
Thanks for pointing this out, Hanh. I was sitting there thinking, "I don't remember a bunch of shots of Luther Vandross in other versions."
Best tourney in years gets the worst "One Shining Moment." I should have gone to bed when the game ended.
Horrible. Just Horrible. Luther Did it best. Did we really need to see that girl singing?
I challenge anyone to say that Jennifer's version wasn't great. She sang the song and I loved it. Don't try to cover your inability to tolerate a song done well but differently. Jennifer is not Luther and thank God she has a great voice of her own. It's not Jennifer's fault that CBS didn't include scenes you wanted to see. Don't blame her that the director decided to flash her more than you would have. The only thing that Jennifer is responsible for is her voice and the way she sang the song.Great! I vote that she hit it out of the park. Quit hating on Jennifer when it's really CBS that you are mad with. Get over it, Luther is gone(unfortunately) It's time to have a strong woman sing a song that did not belong to Luther but to the person who wrote the song. Get on with it! Hater! Sad!
Challenge Accepted..
Jennifer's version wasn't great.
The best versions are with Teddy Pendergrass. This years' version is horrible. The focus is on basketball and great plays. At least, they didn't go overboard on the sparkle graphics this year. They need to go back to Teddy Pendergrass and tourney highlights. Another Shineless Moment. Thanks CBS for ruining something very cool.
That stunk. All the emotion ripped out because someone thought the singer was as important as the event. Pathetic.
Jason, u need to get your head out of JHuds rear and get a life. Just because you express your opinion with conviction doesn't mean you're right. For all of JHuds accolades and so called talent, she hasn't put out a hit album or memorable song everyone remembers. Her attempt to touch a Teddy or Luther song is a disgrace and disrespect to those true artists. The woman has delusions of grandeur as if shes Mariah Carey or Whitney. Does you or she REALLY think she's earned the right to redo their songs or that she came anywhere near performing it in a way that honors those artists? Pfffft. @#(#* puhlease!
The song was ok, but I was VERY upset at CBS for the clips they chose. Where were clips of the National Champions, I think I counted 5 of Duke.. i mean COME ON!!!!!!! CBS also needs to cover the Post Game more..I would LOVE to see the teams cut down the nets. Cut all the post game talk, and show the kids celebrating!!!!
She's painfully over-rated. If it weren't for Jennifer Holliday's iconic "And I Am Telling You" being handed to Hudson in her wooden performance/not worthy of an Oscar in 'Dreamgirls' she'd be nowhere. All that talk of how she left American Idol too early is also rubbish. Go watch her screech and scream when she's supposed to be "singing". Her tone is emotionless and shrill and does not make a pleasing sound.
