Laura Bell Bundy channels Britney Spears at the 2010 ACM Awards

laura-bell-bundy-giddy320.jpgAs a Broadway star, Laura Bell Bundy is no stranger to theatrics. Her recent breakout into country music brought her to the April 18 Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas, where she performed her debut single "Giddy On Up."

Bundy is a fantastic singer, as proven by her Tony Award nominated performance as Elle Woods in the "Legally Blonde" musical. Her ACM performance, however, was heavy on the stunts and low on the vocals. It was reminiscent of Britney Spears' hey-day, full of complicated choreography and back-up dancers being shot out of the floor like cannon balls.

By the end of the performance, Bundy could barely breathe, much less sing! She panted her way through a back-flip before wheezing out the last few words of the song. Of course, Britney can't sing and dance at the same time, either ... but then again, Britney isn't looking to perform at the Grand Ole Opry any time soon.

This was an excellent performance by LBB! With this song the emphasis is on the choreography and she creates a theatrical story. She's innovative, whimsical and gifted. Giddy on up is a fun song and Laura is on her way. She's beautiful inside and out. Hottest cowgirl ever!

No pipes, bad song. Loser.

Laura is amazing!

Lordy! You hit the nail on the head. I had no idea who this girl was when she performed. I yelled to my husband - hey look - Dolly & Britney had a baby! She's HORRIBLE. She sounded like a Dolly Parton wannabe, danced & performed like a Britney wannabe. She can go back to Broadway for all I care. My radio will be promptly turned if she comes on it. Ugh!

She can't sing and is definitely not country as so many aren't today. Where is the country music? Most of the music is cross over and not that great compared to country music 20 years ago.

LOVED her!! What a talent! And so cute, too. GREAT show last night - really enjoyed it. So much talent - really good TV!

Beautiful girl, if she is going to sing live, she needs to work on her cardio.Didn't think she was going to make it to the end.

Highlight of the ACM's! What a great performance! You just gotta love a girl who can sing AND dance. I hope her label can handle her well and takes her far. Great talent.

I think the breathlessness came as a surprise, even to her. If you've ever seen her dance and sing through the Legally Blonde number "What You Want", its clear she's got the pipes and the moves to do it. And it is no small feat to dance that hard AND sing. That said, I do think she was relying heavily on her theatrics to make a good "first" impression on the country music world, and I'm not sure how that really worked out, but I wanted to see her succeed.
As for the skeptics about her country-ness, I think she warrants at least one listen -- her slower music (the Achin' half of the Achin' and Shakin' album) certainly channels a stadard country (steel guitar included) sound, infused with a little bit of blues. Personally, I hope LBB makes it -- I think she does draw from strong country roots.

Man I've got a new fave LBB rocked it- yeah it was very Spears like BUT she was actually singing while dancing- a concept Miss Britt never could get. I though she looked amazing and sounded great - Keep it up Laura !!
