'Designing Women': Dixie Carter's 'The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia'

dixie-carter-designing-women-julia-sugarbaker.jpg"Designing Women" star Dixie Carter passed away Saturday, April 10 at the age of 70. She was a huge part of our childhood as the larger-than-life Julia Sugarbaker on "Women."

Her rants were so fabulous that we once used her "Night the Lights Went Out" piece shown below for an audition for a play.

She was the backbone of the show, with her elegant Southern charm and class. It's hard not to think she was Julia Sugarbaker in real life. Speaking of real life, though, her partner on the show Reese Watson was played by her real-life husband Hal Holbrook. They were also acting onstage together in Florida in "Southern Comforts" when she unfortunately passed away.

To remember Dixie, we would like to share with you the infamous scene in which Julia Sugarbaker defends her pageant-queen sister Suzanne (Delta Burke) from some nasty pageant girls. It's one of her finest moments on the show.

RIP, Dixie Carter. We grew up with you and you will be missed.

So sad! I always loved her in Designing Women. She came across as a class act both on screen and off. RIP Dixie! You'll be missed by many!

Thank you for this.

This is a sad loss for us all and this, seeing her at her Sugarbaker finest, is a lovely way to both remember her and pay tribute to her.

Mrs Dixie Carter was beautiful on and off screen. This was my favorite and most memorable episode. A true and rare class act in her industry and she is and will be missed.

What a Classy Lady ♥
So glad she found happiness with her wonderful husband (and equally classy) Hal Holbrook.
Peace be with Dixie.

Dixie Carter will be missed..My heartfelt sympathy to her family.

My condolences to Mr. Holbrook and her family and friends. She was a class act all the way. Loved watching her in Designing Women - a show ahead of its time. RIP, Ms. Carter...

Sugarbaker had some really unforgettable moments both off and on the record. She'd a great contribution on the screen to please the viewers.

Good Night Sweet Princess

Good bye Dixie, you were one of the best. R.I.P.

I wish someone would start showing those episodes again!
