David Letterman on 'Regis and Kelly': Jay Leno is a 'knockwurst'

David Letterman made a rare foray outside the Ed Sullivan Theater on Friday (April 30) to visit his buddy Regis Philbin on "Live with Regis and Kelly." And -- surprise -- he got in a few digs at his late-night rival Jay Leno."I just loved it," he said of the Leno-Conan O'Brien-NBC mess that went down earlier this year. "We all got to see Jay -- I've known Jay since 1975 or so. When we were all in California trying to become comedians, he was without question the funny guy. He was the guy. ... But then there's also a side of Jay where he's just a little -- I don't know -- he's a bit of a knockwurst. You know what that means?"
Seeing the confused looks on Philbin's and Kelly Ripa's faces, Letterman added, "I'm not sure I do either." (Nor, frankly, do we. We do like knockwurst, though, so thanks for making us hungry, Dave.)
Letterman also shared his thoughts on Leno's oft-quoted "we both got screwed" comment and recounted the filming of their Super Bowl promo with Oprah Winfrey. Take a look (the Leno material starts about eight minutes in):

Letterman is one bitter individual. I guess he's just mad that Leno came right back into 11:30 and started winning the ratings again.

David, Leno is actually LOSING the 18-34 demo to Letterman. His numbers in the most important demo are LOWER than Conan's.
Winning the ratings? David are you mental?
No one cares what Letterman thinks accept the TV press. The TV audience surely doesn't care as evidenced by the ratings. Leno has consistently kicked Letterman's butt for years and is doing again. Face it Dave, Leno is better and more popular and you are just a bitter has been.
Back away from the edge slowly Dave, put the gun down........
& @HeavyRaines17: that most-important demo is a MYTH. get over it, dude. overall audience is what really matters.
Leno does have more viewers than Dave you guys....
HeavyRaines, as that 18-49 demo becomes ever smaller and smaller, as it will for about 40 more years, it matters less and less. Add in the fact that many people aren't even starting to have children until their late 30s, so are still prime consumers well into their 60s, and it begins to become negligible.
Letterman sould have gotten the "Tonight Show" when Carson quit but he did'nt. You're a sore loser Dave, key word is "loser"! You're #2, you'll always be #2 so go bang another intern ya creep!
Who is Dave to be called Leno a knockwurst, when we all know Dave is the real ham?
Not to mention that Conando is the real chorizo.
And Paul Shaffer is the real Canadian bacon.
you guys are too hard on dave. he's not bitter, he's genuinely funny and self effacing and articulate without be a "knockwurst". i love all of em, dave, jay and conan...all funny smart creative guys. regis too!
