'Dancing With the Stars' Buzz Aldrin's 'challenge,' Pamela Anderson and predix

buzz-aldrin-ABC.jpgNo one can say "Dancing With the Stars" eldest contestant, Buzz Aldrin, isn't up for a challenge.

The 80-year-old former astronaut has rapped with Snoop Dog in "Rocket Experience," has been on a Russian nuclear icebreaker to the North Pole and a French submersible down two-and-a-half miles in the ocean to the Titanic -- oh, and he's planning on driving a Hummer to the South Pole next December.

His current challenge: learning to dance in front of millions of people on "Dancing With the Stars."

"It been quite a bit harder than I thought it would be," Aldrin told Zap2it during an interview. "I'm glad it's a taxing challenge, and I'm very glad to have passed that first milestone."

Aldrin, one of the lowest scoring contestants so far (right down there with Kate Gosselin), made it through the first week without spending any time in the dreaded bottom two. While Aldrin wasn't too shocked that his space fans came through for him, he was surprised to see Pamela Anderson get sent to the hot seat.

"I couldn't explain that really because I thought she performed quite well," says Aldrin. "I think the judges maybe had her a little higher, as I recall. Maybe she just didn't get that many votes, but I can't understand that because she's such an unusually attractive person."

While Anderson's looks didn't earn her votes, Kate Gosselin's tabloid appeal certainly did (in case you missed it, her dancing was abominable). But as far as dance ability goes, Nicole Scherzinger seems to be the one to beat -- and Aldrin thinks we'll see her around for a while.

"[Nicole]'s going to rank right up there when the final reckoning is being made. She along with Evan Lysacek.... He's certainly very good on the dance floor too."

Aldrin knows his limitations, but the high-energy octogenarian is approaching his latest challenge with a positive outlook.

"About all I can do is hope for the best. I hope, because that's the reason I got involved in this. When people see my name out there ... they'll be reminded of the wonderful success of the Apollo program we had 40 years ago."

That's right, he's hoping he gets the man-on-the-moon sympathy vote, and he's not ashamed to say it. As former "DWTS" contestant Adam Corolla pointed out in a segment poking fun of the show during last week's elimination episode, Aldrin shamelessly wears a rocket t-shirt every opportunity he gets.

But when you're the Lunar Module pilot on Apollo 11 (a.k.a. the first manned lunar landing in history), you can wear the t-shirt all you want.

Aldrin will see if the space-loving community comes out in full force again to keep him onboard for another week when he competes next on Monday (April 5) night on ABC.

Oh PLEEZE!!! just because you have 8 kids, and get a tv show for that, and then your hubby cheats on you, and most of us cannot imagine why he even stayed married to you in the first place, much less had sex witn you, now she feels becuase the reporters are following her...too bad..get over it...why not go back to being what you really are...just an everyday normal person, start paying more attention to your kids...I am all for a woman being her own self, but Kate has not even reached herself yet...only what others have created for her....

you spelled the Ace-Man's name wrong. it's cArolla.

but anyway, good for Buzz.

Some of these contestants should be eliminated for their attitude alone during their rehearsal times. The pros that they are matched with take a lot of unnecessary abuse from them. They are there to help make dancers out of them and should not be insulted. Worst offenders I have seen so far are Kate, Jake, Adan
and the athlete whose name escapes me at the moment, not Evan but the other one. If they continue to take an abusive attitude, they should be eliminated now!!!

it is great to watch and vote for someone like buzz aldrin. what a hero. and what a role model for everyone. he has class and a fun attitude. i'm tired of sexed up dancers. i like some elegance. i would vote for that any day over pamela anderson. and, kate, quit crying! there is a war going on - people have real problems. IRK!

If they don't want "old" people on this show, then make that the rule. But don't put Buzz on there and then pick away and pick away at him all the time. My godness give the man credit, he is 80 years old. Some 80 year olds can hardly walk, let alone dance. Do they really expect him to move like those young ones. The show should decide what it wants and then set the rules, but leave Buzz alone, he is doing a phenominal job for a man of 80 years old. Ashley is an absolute gem, not only in how she is teaching Buzz, but her tolerance of the nit picking. You don't see Buzz and Ashley whining and carrying on. They rest should all take a lesson from these two.

Kate..... just go home, what are you hanging around for? And if I hear you say you are doing it for your kids one more time, I will puke. Go home and take care of those kids, your priorities are as messed up as you!

Great job Buzz Aldrin. He deserves lots of credit for going on a show with people much younger than him. He deserved more respect than the judges gave him, but he carried himself with dignity. He showed what people his age can do. More power to him. He is more of a hero than the people that are still on DWT, especially people like Kate and Jake who do nothing but whine.

i enjoyed Buzz's dance performances. he is a class act. did anyone else notice Kate's smug puss during the elimination process, confident she would be staying on despite her walking through the performance and her repulsive makeup a la Bette Davis in What Happened to Baby Jane. She did not have the "deer in the headlights" freaky stare or any jitters this time because this stupid show is rigged to keep a slob like creepy Kate in the competition. I don't think Kate practiced at all for the Apr. 6 dance competition and Tony just doesn't seem to give a damn at this point. He cringes when she makes her stupid comments about "cooking for her 8 kids." yeah, right Kate, i'm sure your 5 nannies can't prepare some mac & cheese while you are in Hollywood. what a farce DWTS is.

I'm so sick of people saying Pam is "sexy". Please google "Pam Andersen without makeup" and you WILL RUN FROM THE SCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!! She is sooo UGLY and fraudulent that I can't believe she doesn't go into hiding after these pics were released. This is why guys leave her. When she takes the war paint off her face, she looks like my ugly cousin Ralph. Even her "nipples" are grossly damaged from so much plastic surgery. They're mangled and scarred permanently. SCARY folks, really scary. I'm happy not to be in her dancing shoes. This is why nobody voted for her. They probably saw the pics. She is a makeup magician that must use quarts of cover up to hide everything. UNBELIEVABLE what make up can do!!
