'Bachelor Pad,' 3 scripted shows join ABC summer schedule

ali-bachelorette-one.jpgABC is stepping up the amount of original programming it will have on the air in the summer, with three scripted shows, the "Bachelor"-meets-"Big Brother" reality creature "Bachelor Pad" and several ABC News productions joining the party.

The new shows join the previously announced "Bachelorette," "Wipeout" and "True Beauty" on the schedule. The network will have original programming on four nights a week in the summer: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

"Bachelor Pad" will take over "The Bachelorette's" slot in August. The show will bring together 20 former "Bachelor" and "Bachelorette" contestants and have them compete for cash in a series of challenges, while also offering them "a 'second chance' at finding love," per ABC's press release. Participants will be announced later.

The new scripted shows are "The Gates," about the new police chief of a small town plagued by supernatural phenomena; "Scoundrels," a dramedy about a family of criminals starring Virginia Madsen and David James Elliott; and "Rookie Blue" (formerly "Copper"), which follows the lives of five young police officers, including "Reaper's" Missy Peregrym. All three premiere in June.

Also on the schedule: "Boston Med," an ABC News documentary series about the doctors, nurses and patients in several Boston hospitals (it's a successor to 2008's "Hopkins"); the skyscraper-based game show "Downfall," which will be paired with "Wipeout"; and "Head Cases," in which "Nightline" co-anchor Martin Bashir looks into the leading edge of neuroscience.

Hmmm ... new scripted tv shows on network tv in summer ... what a concept!

NOT BAD, i might actually check a couple of these out...The Gates, Scoundrels, Bachelor Pad. (but def skipping The Bachelorette.) Love the topic of neuroscience but won't watch anything with that skeezy bastard Martin Bashir in it.

"Hopkins" was a good documentary series, so I will definitely give "Boston Med" a try. They really should come up with a different name so that people don't confuse it for another David E. Kelley drama (Boston Public / Boston Legal).

The Gates, Scoundrels and Rookie Blue all sound good. I hate to start watching them though since they won't be on past their short run during summer.

Barb, I think they're COUNTING on people confusing it with a David E. Kelley drama....

Well, The Gates and Scoundrels seem like they might be pretty good, Rookie Blue could be interesting, and Bachelor Pad is a train wreck in the making that I'm seriously tempted to check out. I'll probably give the rest a pass. (Except for Wipeout, of course....)
