'American Idol': 'Eleanor Rigby' gets R&B twist from Michael Lynche
Did you miss Michael Lynche's smooth spin on "Eleanor Rigby" during the "American Idol" Top 9?We've got you covered. The judges were split -- Simon Cowell compared it to something you'd see in a musical, which is pretty confounding to us.
It sounded like an R&B song, not like something out of "Oklahoma." Randy then got off on a weird "Glee" tangent and Kara and Ellen could only sit there and shake their heads.
For our part, we liked it. It wasn't Big Mike's best performance to date but it was solid. And it was the most interesting take we've heard on that song, to be sure. What do you guys think? Was it good enough to keep Mike in the competition?
Also, the mentor next week is Adam Lambert. Could the theme be something more rock-y and if so, will Mike rock the house or will he again bring everything to his world, as he told us at the Top 12 party? Guess we'll have to wait and see! Check out our full recap of the "American Idol" Top 9 here. How do you think they fared on the Beatles week?

Michael's performance of Eleanor Rigby was really great, really made it different and added a cool soul style to it. I think this could already be a hit today. Show your support for you favorite idol at baduku and you could win an ipad. http://www.baduku.com/americanidol9
If you really want a creative new version of "Eleanor Rigby", check out the version by stellar rock band Seven Mary Three. Completely improves on the original and Lynche's version.
Big Mike's performance was great! I LOVED the R&B twist AND the violins. It added a certain melancholy to the song that I adored. While it was theatrical, it didn't sound like a musical. It could easily be a hit on the radio as it is, or done with a hip hop artist add-in. America has some issues with understanding what real music is, as shown on tonight's episode when Mike was found singing for his life. Good thing the judges, who have worked in the industry, still have a sense of who has authentic artistry!
Eleanor Rigby take was average at best.
The song is meant to understated. He just wanted to stick to his own style.
No originality on his part at all.
