'American Idol': Didi Benami disses judges
Eliminated "American Idol" contestant Didi Benami is judging the show's judges, and her assessment isn't especially good.Benami got the boot last week after singing "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" during R&B week, a performance the judges called overdone and overly dramatic. She's now saying the judges should heed some of their own advice.
"I would say be more consistent, just like they told me," she tells the AP.
She also would like to see Simon Cowell and Co. not be quite so biting in their critiques: "I would tell them to not be as harsh because some of the things they said were really, really hurtful and not necessary," Benami adds.
Benami is hardly the first person to complain about the judges' inconsistent advice this season -- Make it your own! No, sing it the way it was written! -- but what do you think about the second comment? Sour grapes or legitimate gripe?
The remaining "Idol" finalists will sing Beatles songs this week.

Hi, It is sad she not blaming herself on going home because of song choice that the only reason she went home picking a bad song. Some weeks she actually did good and sometimes she didn't like last week. I think the judges are so upset because hardly the people is taking there advice at all that is why this season is not the best because of that mostly. All I can say take the judges advice they might be surprise how good they can be.
The problem is, Didi is right... one week the judges say "You sounded just like the original and didn't do anything memorable" and then when they do something unique, they say "Why did you mess it up? You should have done it like so and so."
She has a point. Not sure if it's the Ellen Factor, Simon not caring cause he's ditching after this season, Kara being an airhead, or Randy ... well... being Randy. But the judges this season are just clearly pimping Crystal and apparently just filling their talking time with random putdowns otherwise.
What she said looks like they are responses to other questions and have been taken out of context. So it's not like she went out of her way to say those things, but was coaxed into admitting them.
Both in the case of Didi but overall as a viewer, I really wish the judges would actually provide more constructive criticism to all of the consistents. Part of that comes in being specific and addressing actions over people and their characteristics.
But when they keep saying some of the same things every week, or saying things 'you're pitchy' or 'that wasn't you' or 'it just didn't work', which provides virtually nill guidance moving forward, what if they were to say, 'have you thought about trying this next week' or provided something actionable for the artists to actually work with, instead of just trying to demoralize them in front of the country?
This article has some tips about how to give good feedback--both the judges and Ryan, too, for that matter could learn from it, I think: http://humanresources.about.com/cs/communication/ht/Feedbackimpact.htm
This is not to say the judges shouldn't be harsh sometimes--sometimes critical feedback can provide the greatest opportunity for growth and redirection. But do it with class and provide something consistent, clear, and actionable that they can work with! Help develop the artists while they're with you; they'll likely receive enough criticism outside of the show--give them something they can grow with and exceed your wildest expectations for AI contestants to actually do!
On American Idol they do all of the ridiculous **** like giving inconsistent advice on purpose to try and make it more interesting. I love Didi.
Well Didi deserved to go but she is right. This year more than others I have noticed that the advice is very inconsistant. Simon, as usual offers the best advice and more direct. I like Ellen on the show this year as well.
This american idol season is a let down. The judges are no longer in sync, with Ellen making quirky comments about the contestants appearance and little about their abilities. Simon seems bored with the lack of talent, and let's face it, there is no talent this season. Didi was one of my faves, and I'm proud of her for speaking out! Even I was confused with the judges criticism/comments...and yes, there is no need to be mean! Ryan and Simon's bantering was once fun, but now annoying....is this season ever going to end??????????
I think the judges plays favorites and are totally biased. I think they write their comments before the show and try to sway the audience. I voted for years on Idol but will never vote again. I don't even believe they count the votes. They just want who they want to win and their advice sounds stupid. They say one thing one week and change it the next. So unfair for such a good show.
Would AI maybe be more interesting and fair if the performers were allowed to select their own songs, perhaps even original music, in their own style, week after week from beginning to end. The countless successful artists who did NOT get their start on AI got famous by doing their own thing and making it good enough for people to pay to listen. Why not let 'em sink or swim on their own talent? And hey, let's do away with the voting public completely, and have a small but well-rounded panel of music professionals, not just singers but musicians, producers, publicists, voice coaches, etc. select the winners each week. Thus at least minimizing the attractive and popular factor. Notice I said music professionals. Ellen is one of the most wonderful performers and humanitarians I have even seen, but she has no place on AI. Whatcha think?
I agree with Didi as well as the judges. Didi should have been more consistant (doesn't change the fact that she was my favorite), but one week the judges told her that they liked her mysteriousness and the next she looked slinky and overdone. Don't tell them you like something if you're just going to change your mind the next time they do it. Didi is amazing, much better than Big Mike or Tim Urban. Too bad the only save was wasted! :/
