'The Borgias': Jeremy Irons as Rodrigo Borgia first pic
Showtime's racy take on Henry VIII's reign and his many, many wives, "The Tudors," is over this year. But that doesn't mean fans' costume drama fix will be left unattended to for very long.
"Tudors" creator Michael Hirst (who wrote every single episode of "Tudors") is turning his attentions to the infamous Spanish-Italian family "The Borgias," with Oscar-nominated director Neil Jordan helming at least the first two episodes.
In his first regular series role, Jeremy Irons will play Rodrigo Borgia, the family patriarch who was elected pope (taking the name Alexander VI) in 1492.
Zap2it has the exclusive first look at Irons as Rodrigo:
"The Borgias" goes into production this summer in Budapest, Hungary and will premiere on Showtime in the Spring of 2011.

Alfred Molina or Banderas would have been perfect casting.
Even Andy Garcia.
WHOA...What's wrong with Jeremy Irons..?? He's a good actor. Alfred Molina..?? Ugh. Now HE looks like a scary criminal, wouldn't do as Pope. Good Choice.
Jeremy looks great and will be perfect in this role! I personally cannot wait to see this.
Hmm, not the burly type I was imagining, but he has the sinister part down. Oh, who am I kidding? I'd watch Jeremy Irons read the phone book.
I can't wait to see this. I adore Jeremy Irons. In fact the kiddo wanted me to pop in a movie for her today so I picked The Lion King just to hear Jeremy Irons as Scar.
This is gonna be great!
LOVEEEEEEEEE Jeremy Irons. I cannot wait for this to air!
Jeremy Irons is one of the best English actors around. I loved him In Dead Ringer; a remake of Bette Davis film. Irons played truly psychotic twin brothers. Irons is a sexy old cat and can be meaner than a junkyard dog in his films. I can't wait to see it. If this is a s good as the Tudors I'm Hooked already. I wish they would put Sam Neil in it.
Jeremy Irons is great for this role. I've read and am currently re-reading the historical novel by Mario Puzo about the Borgia's aptly entitled "The Family" it's a fantastic story and I couldn't have thought of a better actor to play the patriarch of this original crime family...Showtime had to do something to fill the void that the Tudors will leave after it's final season
