Syfy to serve up 'Top Chef' Marcel Vigneron show, Thursday reality

marcel-vigneron-320.jpgMarcel Vigneron, known as the bouffant-haired molecular gastronomist on Bravo's "Top Chef," is staying with the NBC Universal family.

The chef is developing a reality series, "Marcel's Quantum Kitchen," for Syfy, it was announced at the network upfront Tuesday (March 16).

The docu-series by executive producers Kevin Dill and Mechelle Collins will center on Vigneron's new catering and event company that will combine imagination and culinary arts to create avant-garde delights for picky clients. Some of the inspiring events include a Goth-rock fashion show, a fairytale graduation party and the ribbon-cutting for a subway line.

How many foods can you turn into foam? We'll find out.

Besides the kooky cooking series, Syfy is also heating up a few more reality dishes:

  • "Force of Nature" - Following Feng Shui master Ariel Towne apply the mysterious discipline to various clients, situations or spaces.
  • "The Latimer Project" - Jason Latimer, a three-time World Champion of Magic, gets together with his illusion design firm Latimer Corp to create props and visually stunning events for clients.
  • "Mr. Impossible" - Dezso Molnar is a "rogue inventor" who solves problems with his technologies.
  • "Paranormal Files" - Gritty, dramatic first-hand testimony from people who've lived through paranomal experiences.
  • "Face Off" - Competition series in the world of special-effects make-up artists.
  • "The Dome Experiment" - A dozen volunteers become test subjects in a bio-environment that will test their roles to see if nature or nurture wins out.
  • "Untitled Artifact Search Series" - A search through history for special artifacts, a la Indiana Jones.
But wait!  There's more reality. Following on the heels of its successful reality Wednesdays, Syfy is dedicating Thursdays to a reality block, beginning July 15th.

"Mary Knows Best" will follow the life of radio host and psychic Mary Occhino and her mismatched group of kids -- including a skeptic, a paranormal investigator and a reluctant psychic -- her older brother and two grandchildren.

Both "Mary" and "Paranormal Investigators," a debunking reality series, will debut on July 15th. "Beast Legends" (Premieres TBD) uses state-of-the-art computer graphics to bring legendary creatures to life in order to explore the myths.

Putting "Quantum" in the title does not make it a sci-fi show. Must every channel become half-full of reality crap?

Wow.
The NBC Universal family is in bad shape.
Hopefully someone else will emerge to carry the SciFi torch that NBC has obviously decided to extinguish with loads of crap ..

Marcel drives me bonkers, but if this crappy show displaces a single hour of wrestling on SciFi it's earned its place in the universe.

Siffy hates Science-Fiction so it is loading up its schedule with tons of reality crap that relates to its mandate as much as having wrestling on...

It's as usual a sad day when news from Siffy reaches the publications. :(

@visitor: I second your comments. Clearly someone else has a golden opportunity to create a real SF Channel.

Siffy was unsuccessful because it hates Science-Fiction. A channel run by people who love SF would be a huge success.

They couldn't hold onto the most successful SF series in the world, Doctor Who (as certified by Guinness), so they have to fill their schedule with something, right?

Channels should stick to their namesakes. I want to tune in to SyFy to see science-fiction, Cartoon Network to see cartoons, etc. Culinary arts shows don't belong on SyFY just as reality shows don't belong on the Cartoon Network.

What has happened to the Sci-Fi channel of late? It certainly has changed, and not for the better. I used to watch it quite often but no more. And I agree, this cooking show should be on The Food Network. But, they probably didn't want it.

As a SciFi viewer from day one, I feel qualified to say... What a load of crap.

Obviously, those among us who are Science-Fiction advocates are wanting more movies about imaginary worlds. (Given the state ours is in, this is not surprising.) A strange new world in which science mixes with your mama's food (in good taste)makes some uncomfortable. It doesn't seem to make Marcel uncomfortable trying to show how the mix works. I hope he keeps pushing conventional thinkers out of the way and continues trying to learn new techniques to offer. What have you done with your talent lately?

I won't debate whether SyFy is the proper venue for this paticular show but I happen to really like Marcel! I've seen two episodes of MQK and find it to be entertaining as well as educational.
