'Real Housewives of New York City' preview: Walking down Bethenny lane
It's crazy how much has changed in the time between last season and this one. The Countess LuAnn de Lesseps is "Count-less." Ramona Singer is inviting Alex McCord to parties. And Kelly Killoren Bensimon actually speaks in recognizable sentences.
The biggest shocker for us was the extent that Jill and Bethenny Frankel aren't BFFs anymore. That's hardly a spoiler. Anyone with an Internet connection knows that the women have let their squabbles go public.
So, just how did Bethenny end up going from friend to villain? We decided to chart her transformation over the seasons.
In Season 1, Bethenny was a girl with dreams and she was planting the seeds for a rather ambitious plan to make herself a brand. Back then, she was like the chorus in a Shakespearean play. She always said what the audience was thinking.
For an example, check out the clip below as she calls Alex and Simon out for their pretentiousness:
In Season 2, Frankel was hitting her stride. Her Skinny Girl margarita was beginning to pick up steam, she was adding more food to the product line and she was working on her book deal. Despite all that, she wasn't above standing around in a supermarket selling her healthy wares to suburbanites that could care less.
That was the season Kelly joined and really rubbed us and Bethenny the wrong way.
Check out the clip below as Frankel shows she can take it as well as dish it out:
Season 2 was also when we first saw Bethenny's relationship with Jill begin to show cracks. Ramona would say that Jill was starting to figure out that Bethenny was no longer the "underdog."
In the scene below, we see the first "signage" of things to come:
In tonight's Season 3 premiere, we meet a new Bethenny. She's dating a handsome new Jason (her previous boyfriend had the same first name, remember? Strange) and she can't get through three sentences without mentioning him. Her book, "Naturally Thin," was a New York Times bestseller, and her Skinny Girl brand has caught on.
Recently, she made headlines when she released the original version of her touched up naked PETA photo. In tonight's premiere, she takes transparency to another level.
Check out the behind the scenes on the PETA shoot below (NSFW):
It's clear from tonight's premiere that the phrase "get a hobby" plays a pivotal role in the breakdown of Bethenny and Jill's relationship.
In this scene from later in the season, the two go head to head over the comment:
Bethenny not only ruffles Jill's feathers. Some of the other housewives look like they're down for a Bethenny brawl.
LuAnn seems to have some leftover beef and in tonight's premiere she makes sure Bethenny knows:
Needless to say Bethenny has become quite the odd woman out this season and it's clear to us why some say it may be her last season.
She does have her own Bravo reality show, "Bethenny's Getting Married" this year. And we wouldn't be surprised if by the end of this one, the other housewives are chasing her out with torches, baby bump and all.
Are you surprised that Bethenny has become the villain or did you see it coming?
Season 3 of "The Real Housewives of New York City" premieres tonight Thu. March 4 at 11/10C on Bravo.

I told everyone that as soon as Bethenny got a BF/husband, Jill Z would turn like a bad penny. Fiance, baby coming, business taking off, Jill can no longer feel superior and "take in" the lost little puppy Bethenny. Jill is a envious bee-yatch and just fakes being nice.
That said, Bethenny is EFFING ANNOYING AS HELL. and that was my opinion, before or after any success(?), i don't like her no matter.
I hate to tell everyone i told you so BUT I TOLD YOU SO!!
I'm not surprised at all. Bethenny often makes rude and insulting comments about the other women under the guise of "keeping it real." And yet when the other women return the favor, she can't take it. She's also a hypocrite because she likes to call the other women out on ****-talking behind each other's backs but she does the same thing so who is she to get self-righetous?
If this is Bethenny's last season, I won't miss her. She was my favorite in season 1 but it looks like fame got to her head and she unveiled an ugly side in season 2!
Bethenny and Jill's friendship drama hardly should come as a surprise. While Bethenny was single her and Jill were BFFs. Now that she's got a "hot" fiance, baby, booming business suddenly Jill's feeling left out in the cold. I mean seriously let's just cut the "crap" its so obvious that there are sour grapes on Jill's end. Grow the hell up Jill. If Bethenny is as a good friend as you claimed her to be you should be happy for her. Also, doesn't anyone else thinks its a little ironic that Jill and Kelly are now such close friends. I used to be a Jill fan NOT anymore...
Being a New York Housewives fan from the beginning, Bethenny has been my favorite from the start.
Coming from such a dysfunctional family, she has proven to be a strong and determined person. She has worked very hard to achieve success.
If the show was instrumental in helping her career, than BRAVO for her! If the others were truly her friend (JILL!), I'd expect to see support instead of abandonment (jealousy?).
The others have no idea how difficult it is to make a name for yourself, especially in this economic climate. But then again, all they had to do was marry their "success".
Congrats Bethany, I wish you a future filled with good health, happiness and a loving family of your own.
I don't like EITHER Jill or Bethenny, they are BOTH complete b*tches! Yes, Jill can't take Bethenny's recent successes (because Jill's a competitive wench), and Bethenny is just plain an annoying narcissistic a$$. They both suck. :(
Oh, and Bethenny's fiance is not that "hot." If you've seen his picture, you'd know he's ugly as hell.
Not surprised in the least about Jill. She's a total phony.
Hell will freeze over before I would watch Bethenny's new reality show!!!!
I was kinda glad to see LuAnn call Bethanny out for her typical back stabbing she should be famous for. Clearly, Bethanny got owned.
I love Bethany...I think she is as real as the housewives can be...I think they all need a real dose of REAL life...I laugh at all the silliness...I live Jill too...I think Ramona loves a good story and will be friendly with whomever she is with at the time...I think LuAnn needs to come down off her high horse and remember these are suppose to be her friends...I mean leave the Countess at home once in awhile...and Kelly...well she opens her mouth and speaks for herself I guess...I really do not understand where she is coming from...I do hope she has a good therapist tho. Good luck Girls....and ummmmm welcome to the Real world???????
Am I the only one that sees how much Bethenney has changed for the worse? Maybe it's pregnancy hormones, but she's become extremely narcissitic, belligerent. In the past, Bethenney's claws would only come out to defend herself and she would step down or acknowledge when she was wrong. This new Bethenney is vicious. How she treated Luann when all she could have said was sorry or I was just kidding. Bethenney is my fav out of the group, but REALLY. Jill's father's died and you just sent her flowers and that's suppose to be your BFF. Regardless of petty arguments, a true friend would have been at Jill's doorstep the minute she heard about her father. I think Bethenny is doomed to live a lonely life because she can't control her mouth. Her fiance is the conservative type and won't be able to deal with her overbearing attitude and narcissism for too long. I hope she comes back to Earth soon. I prefer the old Bethenny.
