'One Life to Live's' Brett Claywell shuts down partying rumors

brett-claywell-one-life-to-live-320.jpgOn Tuesday (March 16), Brett Claywell chatted with Zap2it about being fired from "One Life to Live" after a groundbreaking year playing Kyle, one half of the gay couple known to fans as "Kish."  Scott Evans, who played Kyle's boyfriend, gay police officer Oliver Fish, was also let go.

ABC has said the couple is being written off because of poor ratings and a failure to "resonate with the mainstream audience," and fans speculated that middle America may have rejected the gay storyline due to homophobia.

A source for TV Guide Canada claims that Claywell and Evans' unprofessional behavior is to blame for the K.O. According to the source, schedules had to be changed and scenes had to be discarded due to one actor's "partying" and one actor's "unavailability."

"There is absolutely no truth to this rumor," Claywell tells Zap2it. "Scott and I treated each scene and each moment with the dedication and respect it deserved, and poured our hearts into those roles. Any stories to the contrary, especially this one, are malicious and offensive.  Every scene that was filmed is a testament to that work ethic."

A spokesperson for the show did not comment on rumors, but did say, "'One Life to Live' has a history of ... returning popular characters when they serve the ongoing story. These great characters remain in Llanview, and while there are no immediate plans to advance their story, the door is always open for their return."

How can a spokesperson at OLTL imply that they're "popular characters" while conversely saying that they didn't "resonate with mainstream audiences?" That makes no sense whatsoever.

Bree and Scott are amazing though, and I feel truly sorry that they have to deal with such vile, offensive nonsense. I wish them the best in everything they do.

If there is any truth to this, it's a real shame. One thing that makes me think it isn't just about their behavior (if at all) is that the characters are being written out. Soaps recast all the time, and if Kyle and Fish were really seen as integral to the show they would hang on to the characters and replace the misbehaving actor(s). Undoubtedly there would be some fans that would react badly to such a change, but it wouldn't be the hit that losing the whole storyline is. Oh, well, maybe Claywell can make a trip to the south and reconnect with traditional values--like getting your butt into work on time. (He said with a wink and a smile.)

ABC Daytime pulls this kind of crap on its actors all the time, trying to cover their own *****. At this point, I wouldn't believe them if they said the sun rises in the east.

I don't believe for a minute that Brett and Scott did anything unprofessional. They were the reason I started watching the show again and now their departure is the reason the show has lost me as a viewed forever.

Meh.
Is this some confounding PR move that ABC/OLTL came up with to redirect our anger toward the actors? Fail. If any of this were true and could be proven that would have been the first reason given.

Dear Carina MacKenzie, I have been friends with David Fumero for @16 years. He called me on 3/11/10 to get the tele no. of a mutual friend. We discussed the Kish debacle and he told me that he was "bummed" and that they were "great guys, great actors," very professional, it was a "great experience" haveing the opportunity to work with them, etc. If you know David, you no that he's a sweetheart and also a no BS guy. I have known him since he was a male supermodel and his reputation for professionalism is legendary! If the spurious allegations had a scintilla of truth, David would not be praising them to the skies and wouldn't be commenting on how they helped contribute to his game in their scenes together. These lies regarding alleged unprofessionalism deserve to be debunked and hopefully you can do the debunking. Best, Jeff Reichenbacher

I have been watching oltl since 1968 when I was 9 years old,and am disappointed by Kyle and Fish being let go. I was looking forward to a gay couple bringing up their baby. Also Schyler should also stay on board.

I dont believe these rumours for one moment and Brett and Scott are simply being used as scapegoats by OLTL to cover their gaff in making this monumental mistake...
one only has to watch the excellent performances of these 2 talented actors to see how dedicated they were to their story...they are in fact the only ones acting professionally in all of this and their legion of fans will continue to love and support them...

This whole thing stinks of behind-the-scenes maneuvering. I don't think FV ever thought in a million years this storyline would be such a hit. These boys took words on a page and brought them to life creating one of the best soap couples in the history of daytime, all in a record time. After their love scene, I truly thought Kish was the next "supercouple" of daytime and expected to see them around for a while. I looked forward to watching the Kish baby storyline beginning in January, but then noticed that Kish hadn't been seen in over 2 weeks after the love scene. It appeared that, what was supposed to be a Kish storyline suddenly became "all about Gigi" and Gigi's storyline. Kish was seen less and less, while Gigi was seen more and more each and every day. I also noticed that Kish, in those few times they did appear, were never together, but appeared separately in almost all their scenes. There were no kisses since their famous love scene, and only one hug (at the hospital) when Oliver finally returned from the snowy mountain. And, when we did finally see Kish together, they were arguing.

In the meantime, we were fed a steady diet of Gigi (a very unpopular character for the most part) regularly. So, what was supposed to be a Kish storyline ended up being a storyline for Gigi, an unpopular character, and we saw the withering away of Kish (an extremely popular couple) and get put in the background.

The Kish baby storyline was obviously supposed to be about Kish and the baby. It was even spoiled that Kyle and Oliver were going to be the ones who delivered Stacy's baby. Instead, Kish got backburnered with only a few sporatic appearances and suddenly Gigi was front and center being made to look like Mother Teresa (and played by an actress who gives OLTL fans "The Finger" because they don't like her, and then wonders why they don't).

FV obviously underestimated the popularity of Kish and their fan base which is huge considering what a short time they were on the show. I never even viewed this storyline as a "gay" storyline, but only as one of TRUE LOVE between two wonderful people. (And, by the way, I'm one of those "mainstream" middle-aged married females from Illinois who Mr. Valentini accuses of being homophobes)!

If you go back over the past couple of months, I think it is pretty obvious that Kish was being sacrificed to give FF (Gigi) and Rex some big storyline. I also know that FF is one of FV's "favorites" on the show and he supposedly even introduced them to each other. It is also "rumored" that she caused another actress to be fired from the show and now we have had a parade of actors either fired, quitting, or being put on recurring status, all of whom are "quality" actors who played much beloved characters.

That being said, I think it is really unusual now that a show that has NEVER promoted itself as the other two ABC soaps have is now "advertising" itself using RIGI (two of the least liked characters on the show) in their promotions. Then, we find out that JPL will be on The View getting a makeover. This is obviously a plan by Frons to do his own control damage on what has turned out to be a "nightmare" for Kish fans and for Brett Claywell and Scott Evans. And all they did was give us one of the best love stories I have seen since the days of Luke and Laura. OLTL had a supercouple in the making with Kish and couldn't even see the writing on the wall!
Sorry for the length of this this post, but I felt it had to be said.

Appalled and saddened that this beautiful couple has been sidelined. What a loss to Love onscreen
