'Nip/Tuck' says a quiet goodbye

nip-tuck-finale-320.jpgThe series finale of "Nip/Tuck" is Wednesday night. If you haven't been watching FX in the past week, would you have known that?

What was once one of television's most buzzed-about shows is saying goodbye Wednesday (March 3) with little of the fanfare that's accompanying, say, the final season of "Lost," or even the end of "The Shield" on FX in November 2008. So how come?

In part, it's simply a function of age. "Nip/Tuck" has been on the air since 2003, and like most shows that have been around that long, it's lost some of its luster. Take away the sex and the surgery, and the show is essentially a family drama, and shows like that are exceedingly tough to sustain over such a long haul.

The times have also caught up with the show a little. When "Nip/Tuck" hit the air, FX was one of the only ad-supported cable channels making a serious commitment to original series. Today, TNT, USA, TBS and Lifetime are all players in the scripted series game (in addition to premium channels HBO, Showtime and Starz), and that's leaving out the dozens and dozens of unscripted shows all over cable.

So we'll just tip our hat to seven seasons of wild, weird and sometimes wonderful television from Ryan Murphy, Dylan Walsh, Julian McMahon, Joely Richardson and the rest of the "Nip/Tuck" cast and crew. Here's a preview for the finale.

Will you be watching the end of "Nip/Tuck"? If you left the show, will you come back?

The blame isn't on the age of the show or the competition. The characters, initially flawed and likeable, have turned into self-absorbed, deplorable human-beings. There is nothing to like about anyone on this show, including Liz, who lost my respect when she married Christian. I still watch this trainwreck but don't blame anyone who abandoned it long ago. It's just BAD.

I agree with Michael. I have watched every episode but stayed with this last season mostly because Famke was coming back and, what the hell, it's the last season. But things have gone so far astray these past few seasons that I don't blame anyone for abandoning the show.

I actually completely agree with Michael. While I also still watch the show, it has been a walking corpse for some time. The first two seasons were very good, and the characters were complex and nuanced. After that, the show just fell off a cliff, and it is always jumping a bigger and bigger shark.

What used to be complex characters who you could somewhat relate to, have long since become shallow a--holes who you wouldn't want to know. They are evil and vindictive people who only live to serve themselves. We see enough of that in real life, do we really need to devote an hour each week to them? Well, I have, so I guess I'm not one to talk.

I also think a big problem was the writing. They never give a potentially good storyline (Christian and Liz'a divorce, Raj) time to grow, but were always looking to move on to the next story.

"The Shield" went out to greater fanfare because it was still on the top of its game creatively. The creative team of Nip/Tuck could have taken a few lessons from Shawn Ryan.

I tried to watch Nip/Tuck, but couldn't get past the first five minutes. Didn't care for the characters.

Loved -- and still miss -- the Shield.

I hate to pile on, but ditto. The early seasons were edgy and shocking in all the right ways--it felt groundbreaking. Things started losing steam with wrap-up of the Carver storyline, but everything after the move to LA was miserable and unwatchable. I gave up in the first LA season, sadly, and based on the bits of storylines I've heard since then, don't feel bad about the decision.

Never got the praise for Nip/Tuck, even before the creative downturn. I will always believe that FX's superior programs were held back by it, because I've spoken to a number of people who (unfairly) judged the network in a negative light because it would greenlight a show like that.

I have been a die hard Nip Tuck fan, but this season left me just downright pissed. When Kimber was killed out that was crazy for her character to go out like that was wrong. Earlier seasons were great, the way they would leave you hanging was wonderful. To have this once great show end the way it did was a waste of seasons past. I love the characters and I just wish it would have kept to the writing that made it a hit in the first place. To bring Ava back and have her just boreing was wrong. I feel that the show could have went out with a bang,it should have left us begging for more, instead it left me pissed that I wasted a day pining away for it only to be let down.
Gee Thanks for the let down.
But I will say to the actors and actresses of the show thank you for bringing a little craziness to my life once a week.l

I LOVE ABSOLUTELY LOVE NIPTUCK!! but this last season was a let down and I blame the writers.. they are the best I mean the very best characters in my book and the writers brought on a wonderful show and also RUINED it.. I could've written a better ending and I do not even write! You would think for the last season it would have been fabulous...OH well at least we got to STARE at the Gorgeous Christian one last season.

While I quit watching a few seasons ago, I think I could definately come back and watch it from the beginning on DVD.

I stopped watching Nip/Tuck when they moved to LA. By that time, I had just lost interest.

I did watch this season, though, since I knew it was the last, and although it wasn't thrilling, it was interesting. I loved how the writers had Sean and Christian go to "couples therapy." We got a real chance to see how the characters viewed each other and their relationship.

I did love the season finale. It was fitting, and the Art Garfunkel song was the perfectly chosen piece for the setting. I wasn't looking for a big dramatic ending because this season was, to me, about their relationship, and for them to be the type of people they wanted to be.
