'Melrose Place's' Thomas Calabro on his role going forward: 'I myself was shocked'

thomas-calabro-melrose-place-320.jpg"Melrose Place" is in for a change when it returns Tuesday, March 9 -- a "lighter, brighter, snappier show," star Thomas Calabro tells Zap2it.

When we last left "Melrose Place," the mystery of Sydney's murder had been wrapped up. Thomas Calabro's character Dr. Michael Mancini's wife Vanessa was found to be the murderess.

So is "Melrose Place" going to continue on with such a dark, mysterious undertone?

"We're going to move onto more of an episodic, three-episode-arc kind of storylines as we navigate our way towards a lighter, brighter, snappier show," Calabro says. "It's still going to have those huge, dramatic circumstances, but I believe the way it'll be handled will be a little different moving forward."

Will the lighter, brighter "Melrose" feature Dr. Michael Mancini, now that his former lover Sydney and his wife are dead? "I play a substantial role in the second half of the season. Some very surprising things happen between me and my two sons. I myself was shocked," Calabro teases.

Oooh, intrigue! "Melrose Place" returns to the CW with brand-new episodes on Tuesday, March 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

If you'd like to see more of Thomas Calabro around the web, check out his website at  www.ThomasCalabro.com or follow him on Twitter or Facebook.

UPDATE: We previously wrote that Calabro's on-screen wife was presumably in jail. We had forgotten she was killed by Ashlee "Crazy Eyes" Simpson's character Violet. We have amended the post and apologize for the error.

The next interesting plot development will be the FIRST interesting plot development on this show, which was horribly miscast and is badly written. Lighter, brighter? If I want that, I'll go sit in the sun. Sheesh, how about a story we give a crap about, Thomas?

This show has so much potential! I really hope they give it the chance it deserves like the first incarnation. The first season of the original SUCKED and the ratings were terrible, but they gave it a second season and it became a huge hit. I believe it could happen again. If not, who cares, move on... but i think they need to give it the chance it deserves.

I agree with first poster, they should save their bragging for GOOD storylines. But the show's not that bad, and yes it could get better.

"his wife is presumably in jail"
i thought she died? killed by Ashlee Simpson (don't remember her name on the show)? just another proof no one is watching this show... just sayin'... it won't be missed...

Lighter? What this show needs is soma CAMPY, shocking, scandalous, over the top Drama. Have they forgotten that's what made the original notorious? bing the CAMP, and we'll bring the ratings.

Yes, Vanessa was killed in the pool by Violet...She's NOT in jail. I love this show, always loved the original, too. But the best part of both shows...was Laura Leighton. Hopefully, the writers resuscitate Sydney, and keep her on the show where she belongs. And if the series does unfortunately get cancelled, what would be better than a final scene, revealing Sydney is indeed alive? This show should not be cancelled, (the original series had a slow start, too) it definitely has potential to be a huge hit, and a guilty pleasure.

The writers of this show made a stupid decision to try to make this remake into a mini CSI with the murder/mystery plot.

The role that Laura Leighton played was originally offered to Heather Locklear who turned it down, and it's stupid to kill of either of these characters.

Then if you go to the trouble to bring Laura Leighton's character back from the dead, why kill her off again? It is completely illogical as Laura Leighton was one of the reasons people tuned into the original Melrose Place.

The new Melrose Place shouldn't be canceled, but the writers who thought of this dumb idea should be fired and they should pull a "Dallas" and say the 1st season was a dream so that Laura Leighton can be brought back.

This show is cancelled. It doesn't have a confirmed spot on next season's schedule, and Heather Locklear wasn't able to boost ratings in a meaningful way. Being off the air for months has likely pushed away the remaining loyal viewers. These changes will do little to stem the ratings bleed out.

Sorry don't watch, I'm too busy watching my DVDs of Reaper!

227 episodes of the original 'Melrose' that I could recite every word from. I've been a long-time fan of the series, of the characters, and have collected all kinds of memorabilia - mugs, hats, socks, posters, magazines, etc. And this new show is just AWFUL. The writers have created new characters with zero interest and have destroyed the old ones. Once the original members check out of 'Melrose', I'm done with it.
