'Lost': 'Orientation: Ryan Station' talks 'Sundown'

terry-oquinn-lost-s6-320-2.jpgMaureen "Mo" Ryan from The Chicago Tribune couldn't wait to talk about this week's episode of "Lost," so we quickly scheduled a podcast in order to rehash the episode. While we liked the episodes to varying degrees, we found plenty of common ground upon which to base our weekly podcast. I could probably spend most of my waking hours picking her brain about the show, and I'm lucky to spend a little time each week doing so. Hopefully you've enjoy our discussions to date.

A few programming notes: as I mentioned last week, this podcast is now available on iTunes. It's also available for download just below the embedded player at the end of this entry. I wouldn't necessarily recommend listening to us on the treadmill as a way to keep your adrenaline pumping, but both are still great ways to listen to the podcast on the go. While Mo and I discuss the episode as we watch it from our respective abodes, these podcasts work both as audio commentaries for the eps as well as general discussions of "Lost" in general. I've embedded the Hulu player for "Sundown" below, but you need not have to watch along with it to enjoy the podcast.

(One last programming note: don't miss my latest "Course Corrections" article, also about "Sundown." Apparently, there was a lot to talk about concerning this week's hour of television.)

Next week, we'll have another special guest in the virtual booth with us. But for this week, it's just Mo and I. As she says at the start of the podcasts: "Two Ryans enter. Only one leaves." Sadly, she got Dogen's dagger, so I think I'm a goner. But listen for yourself and see!

nice podcast. I'd agree Smocke definitely gave a "hmm, I can use you..." look at Kate. My bet: he'll use her to lure out Jack, and Hurley will have to stop him. I also think the answer to all Lost questions are hidden in Turban Tim's turban, so I could be wrong. John Locke is not the originator of utilitarianism but rather, the name he died with, Jeremy Bentham.

"They killed Dogen!"

"You bas***ds!"

KEEEEEAAAAAMY!
Speaking of Turban Tim, Dogan was in the tainted hot tub for, like, two seconds. Why didn't he try to revive Dogan????

fyi:

Dogan's Machine of Truth also made an appearance in the movie Burn After Reading. THAT is why Sayid was so upset.

Thx for the clear-up, Joe. I figured I got that wrong the second it left my lips. The power of crowd-sourcing works again!

I really enjoy listening to your podcasts, but PLEASE tell the woman to STOP EATING while recording. It's absolutely disgusting.

I thought Ryan served hot pockets and fish biscuits at all his podcasts.

And were this not a professional operation round here, Mo and I would wash it down with some Dharma boxed wine.

NOT YET MEASURED: "Catch a Falling Star" .... Lucifer?

Yes! The fallen star (angel) is Lucifer -- and the island is the pocket!!! (Or, even better, hot pocket!)

CINDY: "...I think I prefer the previously suggested "Eithers" better. It seems to capture their wishy-washiness a bit better."

I agree!

ANDREI2.0: "deathbed download"

Love it!

EricH: "Perhaps, depending on which side the candidates end up on determines their "reward" in the epilogue timeline."

Sounds quite possible.

FRANK: "I just despise this 'flash sideway' business."

And I thought I was the last angry man!

Gob/Lolo/Jess/etc: "Dogan would not have sent Sayid out there with the knife if he didn't think there was SOME possibility of it working."

Why not, if his intention was to have Smocke kill Sayid?

RYAN: "The work that has to be done? Waking people up from the nightmare of this world and foiling Smocke before it can happen."

Wouldn't that be extremely redundant from what we've already seen ("we have to go back!")?

As a Kate fan, however, I love your point about how important Kate's has now become!

The award for making it worth my while to spend insane amounts of time reading the hundreds of comments posted in the last 48 hours goes to FRECKLES for:

"...it would be the equivalent,to me, of having Bernard be married to Nikki in the sideways time line."

That kind of sums up how I feel about Darlton's apparent (and I stress apparent because I hope I'm wrong) purpose with this episode to "prove" once and for all that that Sayid is a born killer who is beyond redemption.

To me, since island-Sayid was dead for two hours (and I hope we eventually find out what Miles heard during that time) and infected, his apparent killings of Dogen and Lennon shouldn't be held against him. And he went out of his way to avoid killing any of the loan shark team until they kidnapped him and clearly threatened Nadia and the kids.

So to me none of this proves that Sayid is evil, and thus if that was the purpose of this episode then I would have preferred one about Bernard and Nikki.

ANON: "If it turns out that Sayid's sideways neice and newphew are really (biologically) his kids (or if he ends up with Nadia) then that confirms the Epilogue theory...

JEFFC: Why would that confirm the epilogue theory?

I posted that in a rush (forgetting to sign it) during a commercial, in a giddy state over Miles acknowlegement that jungle-Claire is hot. At the time I thought that yet another main character (like Locke and Jack) being better off in the sideways timeline would confirm that it is the epilogue to our heroes overcoming MIB (and their own inner demons) on the island.

But I now think it is more likely that Sayid will have a bad epilogue life, now that it has been "proved" (according to some) that he is a born killer and apparently joined the dark side on the island. But I'm still hoping for redemption in both the island world and sideways world.

SCHMOKER: "Time to put my Lost mania away for this week, lest it consume me whole."

I tried. God I tried. But I only made it 48 hours.

BTW: Good job on the podcast, Ryan. It marries up quite nicely.
