'Dexter': Season 5's main story has been decided

"Dexter" hit the 27th Annual William S. Paley Festival Thursday (Mar. 4) night and, though there wasn't much information revealed about the highly anticipated fifth season, we did manage to glean a few morsels of intel from executive producer Sara Colleton

Seems the writing staff has just recently broken the main story for "Dexter"'s fifth year and they're not at all nervous about how it will be received. "We've spent the last month working out season 5," Colleton says in the clip below. "And we love Season 5 and we think the audience is going to love it just as much. It's great."

Now, whether or not Dex will get custody of not only baby Harrison but Rita's (Julie Benz) two kids as well -- now that she's out of the picture -- remains to be seen. What we did learn, however, is it's definitely something that's been discussed and will be addressed as soon as the show returns.

Colleton says we won't be leaping very far forward in time. Last we saw Dex, he had just discovered his wife in a bathtub of blood. When we see him next, he'll be dealing with the fallout from her death. "All [the writers] uniformly felt that it would be a cheat to jump ahead," she explains. "Everyone -- Dexter and the audience -- got a kick in the gut [with] the very last episode. And so, to not have him process that and allow his catharsis and the audience['s catharsis] is a cheat. And the trick is to make it fascinating and make it unique and make it "Dexter"-ish and I think we have."

Apparently some of that fascination will revolve around Dexter's self-revelation. Though Dex has always felt that he's been honest with himself, it seems his inner voice has been hiding a few things.

Also, be prepared to see Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) get very protective of her brother during this time.

What else?

Well, we asked Colleton whether or not this season's "big bad" will be played by a recognizable name a la John Lithgow in Season 4.

Man, this show is sooo good! It blows me away every season...

Can't wait til season 5, LUV LUV this show!!

omg its the best ive ever seen, and she's right, i was kicked in the guts when i found out rita died :(

when is the new season? never in my life would I ever be so enthrolled with this series.

can't wait dexter season 5, it will be awesome... dexter is the best tv series i ever seen

Season 5 will be airing in September - the wait is killing me...

For the people who say that now Rita is dead, Dexter will just become some kind of killing machine are totally wrong.
Firstly, it was Dexter's actions and his 'dark passenger' that ultimately lead to Rita's death. He might not have anticipated it nor wanted it, but because he is who he is, this happened to Rita.
Secondly, he is now a single parent with three children! One of which is his own. That is a big responsibility to handle.

So in my opinion, maybe Dexter will actually STOP being tempted by his dark passenger and live a normal lifestyle. He will not only feel guilty for Rita's death, but he will realise that there is a big role ready for him as a dad.

I loved Rita and I think she was the audiences' way of maybe slightly relating and even loving Dexter. She humanized him.

All in all, I cant wait for season 5. I've read on so many discussion groups all these different ideas people have of what is to come. I really hope the writers dont disappoint the fans with a lame storyline. What the writers have done takes alot of guts, but guts are only the beginning. I really hope they didnt go in on this blinded and actually (despite their interviews) have something extremely great and entertaining planned.

I cant wait!

Well, hopefully dexter will realize that he is partially responsible for Rita's death as he invited Trinity into his life and put his family at risk. Based on his inner voice in S4, it seems he was in denial of that -- he was naive enough to think his fake name and ID would keep him safe. One would think that a serial killer would be way ahead of that, but that is makes Dexter unique. He consistently underestimates people. I hope in S5 that we find Dexter feeling remorse and fighting with his dark passenger. Maybe the big bad this this season will be his own struggle mixed with all of his responsibilities and the fact that Deb now knows part of his secret.

Also, LG needs to go.

I'd hit it!
