Chris Evans takes 'Captain America's' shield

chris-evans-capt-america.jpgAfter a long and winding casting road, Marvel ended up finding Captain America in its own backyard.

Chris Evans, who starred as Johnny Storm in the two "Fantastic Four" movies, has accepted Marvel Studios and Paramount's offer to play Steve Rogers in "The First Avenger: Captain America." The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog says the only barrier to sealing a deal is "dotting the i's and crossing the t's."

Marvel and CAA, which represents Evans, aren't commenting on the development.

The casting of Evans ends more than a month of speculation about who would take up the Cap's shield. Chris Pine ("Star Trek"), John Krasinski ("The Office"), Mike Vogel ("Cloverfield"), Chace Crawford ("Gossip Girl") and Scott Porter ("Friday Night Lights") were among those who were connected to the part, which is a linchpin of Marvel's strategy to round up several of its heroes for an "Avengers" movie in the next few years.

The 28-year-old Evans was offered the role on Friday (March 19) and, according to Heat Vision, spent the weekend considering whether he wanted to take on another superhero role following the "Fantastic Four" movies. After deciding to take the role, the deal moved along pretty quickly.

Evans will next be seen in "The Losers," set for release in April, and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," which hits theaters in August. "Captain America" is scheduled to start filming in England in June.

I'm just glad they finally found someone. Stopped caring who it would be after a thousand names were rumored

well you can kiss this franchise goodbye, such a bad choice... NUFF SAID...

AWFUL CASTING and pure lazyness for recycling a marvel actor. I will not see this or the other 9 movies they got him in because Hollywood hates comic book fans and do not respect the characters they love. Wake me up in 2025 when they reboot the franchise again because this one sucked. MARK VALLEY FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA DANGIT!!!!

If he can lose the smarminess/smart-*** aspect he usually brings to roles (that was perfect for Johnny Storm, BTW), maybe there's a chance. This definitely seems like the riskiest casting choice, compared to Thor and Iron Man. Let's home he gets strong direction from someone with a clear vision of what needs to be done.

this is horrible. They had it right when John Krasinski was testing for it, but oh well....I wanted to see Jim Halpert as Cap'n! oh well.

not going to work

Oh yeah, forgot about him being in Sunshine. Frankly, I don't get where some people get this douchebag vibe from him as he comes across as pretty likable and charming. I don't know whether his energy is really needed for Captain America though, who, lets be honest, is a pretty dull character all things considered. I see him as a cheap nfl jerseysbetter fit for DC's Flash.

Sadly, I hope the first Captain America movie is a fail so they'll immediately reboot it with a better-casted Cap.

Lazy casting indeed. He's already another Marvel character. Granted, one from a forgettable movie, but it's also not a good fit.

I like Valley for maybe US Agent; I pulled more for an Awesome Captain America.

Chris Evans is not a bad choice, however to make this a lasting franchise, they need to put Evans on a serious UFC training camp with Randy Couture ASAP. If CA was a real person he would be the pound for pound best fighter in the world, I haven't seen Evans in many action roles, so they need to make sure they get that aspect of CA right. For the movie they have to put CA against impossible odds and still have him overcome. Marvel don't F this up, I've been waiting a long time for this movie.
