Box Office: 'Alice in Wonderland' seizes $116.3 million. Oh frabjous day!
"Alice in Wonderland" has entered a magical world known as the history books. Oh frabjous day, calloo, callay! The Tim Burton-directed fantasy feature shot to the top of the box office its opening weekend, raking in a record-breaking $116.3 million in domestic sales, according to Exhibitor Relations early estimates.
This handily beats Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" as the biggest film to open in the first quarter. That film had earned $83.3 million in its five-day opening weekend in February 2004. "Alice" had already pulled in a phenomenal box office in its debut Friday, nabbing a record-breaking $41 million.
The sequel to the traditional "Alice in Wonderland" tale stars Mia Wasikowska as an older Alice who has been troubled by dreams filled with rabbits wearing waistcoats, talking animals and horrific monsters. When she falls down a rabbit hole during a party, she discovers that there's a reason all this seems so familiar. The film also stars Johnny Depp as the Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen.
The only other new film that opened in wide release was Antoine Fuqua's cop drama, "Brooklyn's Finest," which took in an estimated $13.5 million.
Paramount's "Shutter Island" fell from the top spot, which it held for two weeks in a row, to third, still earning a respectable $13.3 million in its third week out.
The remainder of the Top 12 films follow in descending order: "Cop Out," the Oscar-nominated "Avatar," "The Crazies," "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," "Valentine's Day," "Crazy Heart," "Dear John," "The Tooth Fairy" and "The Wolfman."
Of not is "The Secret of the Kells," the one Oscar-nominated animated film that had not opened in the U.S. until Friday (March 5). It earned an impressive $40,715 for its one screen.
With "Alice's" stellar ticket sales, the box office take from this week's Top 12 films is $185.8 million, nearly 83 percent higher than the Top 12 from the same weekend in 2009.

This movie was amazing. I went into it thinking it was a remake of the cartoon so I was a little let down when it turned out to be a different story line. still well worth every penny.
