'Avatar' DVD release set for Earth Day
"Avatar" fans should brace themselves though -- no bonus features, and they will have to settle for *gasp* 2-D.
But the stripped-down version is all for a good cause, according to the Los Angeles Times and the movie's producer, Jon Landau.
"We went to Fox and told them that, for this movie, we wanted to do something really special and reach for the best presentation of any film in the history of the format," Landau says. "This is a movie that has done the unexpected every step of the way. Fox agreed with us and the result is amazing. Everything that is put on a disc takes up room -- the menus, the extras, the trailers and studio promotions -- and we got rid of all of that so we could give this movie the best picture and sound possible."
Landau says anyone who watches the 2-D version will be "blown away" by the image.
But with premium quality comes premium pricing. Suggested retail pricing for the Earth Day release will be $29.98 on DVD and $39.99 on Blu-ray. Although shelf prices will likely be closer to $19.99 for DVD and $29.99 for Blu-ray, according to a source at Fox.
With a worldwide take of over $2.6 billion so far, Fox is banking on the earth-conscious blue Na'vi to bring in a lot more green.

Should that be $2.6 billion?
Although I'm still going to buy it, I am sorely disappointed that there won't be bonus features.
I'll wait for the better version with bonuses later. They should make it a 2 Disc DVD.
So they are charging more than normal on a bare-bone release? Sounds kinda greedy, even using better quality as a reason. At least have a complete 2nd disc for bonus features. That way you wouldn't have to lower the quality of the movie.
Not to be obnoxious here, but not everyone has got Earth day committed to memory. It would have been nice to include a calendar date SOMEWHERE in this article.
FYI, Earth Day is April 22.
You're welcome!
Releasing a movie on DVD with no extras (not even the movie's trailer) stopped being OK over 10 years ago (unless you are buying a cheap $5 release). This has nothing to do with good causes or getting the most out of the pciture and audio, this is just Fox wanting to do what New Line Cinema did with the Lord of the Rings movies by screwing customers and trying to get them to buy the same release multiple times. The fact that they are gonna make you pay $30 to get the real release in November (another sign of greed) for just the DVD version is another outrage. I know that on April 22 I will be letting everyone I see in stores near this release know that they should not buy this greedy release since the real version comes out in November.
RE: TJ Spkye... Actually, according to the LA Times there will be THREE versions of "Avatar" released. This bare bones one (2D and no extras) on 4/22/10, then "Ultimate Edition" in November this year (with extras) but I think is still 2D, and finally sometime NEXT YEAR they will release a 3D edition.
Will people really buy all 3?? I'm going to try and wait for the November one or better yet wait for the 3D version out NEXT YEAR (geeeez!!). I want the movie in 3D, this movie being the one to spur the real 3D craze in Hollywood... this movie that is meant to be seen in 3D.
You can always pre-order your Avatar DVD at www.BuyAvatarMovieDVD.com
They have the DVD and Blu-Ray
I was lucky enough to see this movie in theater both in the basic version and the 3d version. I have to say that the imaging was fantastic. Although I loved the 3d version, I'll be in line to get this one on Earth day...Can't wait...
I HATE THIS MOVIE
