'American Idol': Crystal Bowersox's 'Me and Bobby McGee'

It's safe to say that Tuesday night (March 23) was not "American Idol's" finest hour (or two hours). Given the theme of Billboard No. 1 songs, the 11 remaining contestants ran through a litany of weird song choices and shaky performances.One performer who didn't flame out, though, was Crystal Bowersox, who performed the Kris Kristofferson-written Janis Joplin chart-topper "Me and Bobby McGee." Was it maybe a safe choice? Sure. But she also was her typically strong self. Here's her performance:
Simon Cowell compared her version of the song favorably to Pink's cover. For compare-and-contrast purposes, here's a version she sang on "Today" in 2007.

Better than Pink! Unless she bombs or comes out of the closet, this competition is over.
Better than Pink! Totally! Chrystal is so much more pleasant to listen to. Pink sounds like she's in danger of losing her voice at any moment. Sorry Pink! Were u having laryngitis too? Chrystal's already my American Idol for 2010. Jst as Adam Lambert was my Idol last yr. Right fr d get go.
Crystal is good and sang her version well but Pink hit the "nail on the head". The raspy voice was the touch to mimic Janis. I prefer Pink's version.
I disagree. Pink and Janis are both better. You need the gravel and grit. And the breathie sounds.
Crystal Bowersox is light years ahead of anyone else in the entire group. She is already a star as far as I am concerned. She should win this running away.
But the point isn't to mimic Janis. It's to have a good performance. Pink's sounds exactly like a mimic. There's nothing new, nothing different. It's good, but it's not Crystal's. Crystal made me like her newer version and the old version even more than I already did at the same time. That takes skill. She didn't mimic Janis. She honored her.
Crystal sang every note of a difficult melody perfectly, brought originality, and a crescendo of energy. No other contestant came close.
others should try for 2nd place, bowersox by far the best
Crystal has a good voice but in the music biz, they are always looking for gimmicks like Lady Gaga. If she wins, she deserves it but I find all winners of this show dull.
Crystal is the safe choice, but if A. I. is to find some new other than another Janis.
I want to see something more.
With Simon promoting her as the winner, I'm not so sure.
I'm glad Simon is leaving A.I.
