'American Idol 9' Top 11 Live: Miley Cyrus texted, Ryan Seacrest gifted

miley-cyrus-american-idol-mentor.jpgZap2it's weekly "Dispatches from Inside the 'Idol' Dome" brings fanatics like you (and us) closer to all the action. What didn't viewers see on the TV broadcast? We got it covered.

During the "American Idol" Top 11 performance show, it kind of looked like Miley Cyrus was more engaged with her mobile device duty than the "mentoring" duty. Oh yeah, and some audience member brought Ryan Seacrest a picture of his grandparents. Cool or creepy? Here's what else happened during the live taping:

Smilin' Miley Cyrus

  • Miley was sitting with a skinny woman with scraggly bleached hair. Then we remembered the Oscars and realized it was her mom.
  • Also sitting with them was "So You Think You Can Dance" judge and Oscar producer Adam Shankman.
  • Before the show, they told us to spit out our gum so we wouldn't be caught on camera chomping on gum. Did you notice the shots of Miley chomp-chomp-chomping away on TV? She looked like a cow with its cud.
  • Finally, Miley appeared at times to be more interested in texting people than paying attention to the performances. Tsk tsk.

So That's What Happened to Brian Dunkelman

  • We might have to rebuke Seacrest's title of Busiest Man in Show Business, at least during "Idol" tapings. There is another host named Cory whom you never see on TV. He warms up the crowd and during commercial breaks interviews people and hands out prizes. After Debbie the Stage Manager, Cory might be the busiest person in the house.
  • One of the people Cory interviewed was a woman from North Carolina who gave him a picture of Ryan Seacrest's grandparents, which Cory then delivered to Ryan on stage. To his credit, Ryan seemed just tickled and not at all creeped out!
  • One of Cory's prizes was a Didi Benami bag that somehow ended up with Randy Jackson. He couldn't seem to figure out what to do with it, so Ellen DeGeneres snatched it from him and threw it into the mosh pit to wild applause.
  • Cory was an excellent off-camera host, though he did introduce Paige Miles as "Paige Davis," who we're pretty sure was the host on "Trading Spaces." Oops. He also at one point referred to someone as "Casey Stevens." Did he mean Katie Stevens? Casey James? Could go either way.

The CBS' studios Chuck E. Cheese?

  • We're convinced there must be a skee-ball game set up backstage. That's the only explanation for why the judges cannot stay seated for a 3-minute commercial break. Every break, they would all bolt for these big doors to the backstage area with their significant others. What is back there? Skee-ball? Santa Claus? Gold bullion? Seriously, people. Please sit still for 2 minutes.

Mosh Pit Minxes

  • Both Tim Urban and Simon Cowell interacted with various blonde long-limbed lovelies from the mosh pit once the cameras went to commercial, though Simon kept his hands to himself. Tim gave his girl a big hug.
  • The mosh pit seemed to range in age from 9 or 10 years all the way to high schoolers. However, the outfits would make you think all the female mosh pit fans were at least 23 years old. Yikes. Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be pit skanks on "Idol."

People don't really give Miley Cyrus the credit she deserves but after tonight I have to admit it, she must have been a great mentor because everyone's performance have had huge improvements. For the most part everyone was good. Tim Urban really has redeemed himself tonight because normally he sucks. Crystal was kind of cute with her rug moment. I'd say only Paige seemed pretty weak. I think its time for Paige or Andrew to go home.

If you haven't already make sure you check out their official public opinion polls on Baduku, the Idols can really use all your support and words of advice, especially Siobhan who's clearly a favorite but isn't getting the fan support she deserves online. http://www.baduku.com/americanidol9

There's no doubt that someone with Miley's talent and her millions of dollars doesn't get what she deserves. You nailed that.

Cory had been off on another project the last few weeks, so this was his first appearance in the Idoldome for a while. Might account for him mixing up the names.

When the judges leave the studio and go to the hallway, they often have their makeup touched up.

What are you people talking about? This was the worst performance show of the season...MOST, not all, of the contestants were terrible this week. Crystal, and a couple others were good, but the rest, not so much...These people are supposed to be America's best out of 100s of 1000s of people. Are you kidding me? And, btw, Miley Cyrus gets TOO much credit, already, because she has no talent...They couldn't find anyone better to mentor? It's beyond me why people keep buying her records, and going to her movies. pathetic.

I don't know where this "Miley loves to text" stuff comes from. I watched the entire show and didn't see her with a phone in her hand or even look ilke she could be texting anyone. Ok....

But besides that, she was a ridiculous choice for guest mentor. The girl herself CANNOT sing. Her voice is grating and there is so much synthesizing with the mics and sound equipment that you could basically have a monkey fart into the mic and it would sound exactly like she does.

Besides that, what is with these idiot girls getting their noses pierced? Do they just not care how trashy that makes them look? During the segments where Miley was meeting each contestant one-on-one, she just looked like crap. How many crappy, walmart-looking necklaces does a person need to wear? And couldn't she have spruced up a little instead of going there looking like she just finished playing with her dog out in the yard for a few hours?

But on to the performances.....in what is definitely the WEAKEST season of the show yet, there were nearly as many terrible performances as there were decent ones.

NEEDS TO GO HOME YESTERDAY: Paige, Tim, Andrew

GETTING WEAKER BY THE WEEK:
Katie, Michael, Aaron, Casey, Didi

LOOKS LIKE TRASH/FREAK BUT STILL HAS A GREAT VOICE:
Crystal & Siobhan

VERY GOOD VOICE BUT NO PRESENCE AT ALL:
Lee Dewyze

I agree with those who said that this was one of the worst peformance nights in Idol history. Only Crystal and Casey sounded good. Siobhan was doing well until she screamed that last note. By the way, last year people said that Adam "screamed" in his songs, but he was ALWAYS on key, which Siobhan was not last night. But by far the worst was Paige. I do feel bad for her since she has laryngitis, but she really murdered that Phil Collins song. **BLECH** This has got to be one of the weakest groups of finalists, and I bet not many people will turn up for the Idol summer tour this year. :(

I am interested with your article, it is very nice, I would like to have a further connection with you, please send me an message.

I have to agree, this season is horrible. There are only about 3 good singers. The best thing idol did this season was get Ellen involved. She definitely brings life to the show. Kara needs to quit trying to be Paula. Getting a little old. Maybe Idol needs to go and bring on a new show!

I think Ellen is great elsewhere but does not fit with American Idol at all!

Paige's performance was one of the worst of ALL time. Bummer. I kind of like her.
