Winter Olympics: What's the lamest sport?

belbin-agosto2-olympics-320.jpgIt's come to our attention that the ice dancing competition in the Winter Olympics stretches over three rounds, one more than any other figure skating competition in the games.

To which we say: Really? Three nights of that, with the costumes and the no jumping and just the general goofiness? It also got us thinking about this: Could ice dancing be the lamest event in the Olympics?

Ice dancing -- which unlike pairs figure skating features no jumps -- surely has some competition. In the winter games, we'd include biathlon -- a military exercise at the first Winter Olympics that somehow became full-fledged sport -- and curling. As much as we like to watch curling on TV (thanks in large part to commentator Don Duguid), it's not much of an athletic endeavor.

The Summer Olympics also have their share of obscure/odd sports. Quick, can you name the five legs of a modern pentathlon? (That'd be fencing, pistol shooting, swimming, horseback show jumping and running.) Table tennis and synchronized swimming make our list too. (Fun fact: From 1900-1920, the Summer Olympics also included a tug of war. We'd kind of like to see that again.)

Vote in the poll below and share your thoughts in the comments: What's the weakest Olympic event?

A vote for ice dancing. It's redundant and lame compared to the pairs figure skating. And frankly after ballroom dancing flopped as an Olympic demonstration sport, there's no reason for the on-ice equivalent to remain. I'd rather watch bowling.

You probably only watched the compulsary dance where they all skate to the same music and dance. The other two events are much more interesting.

Everyone rips on curling for not being athletic enough to be in the Olympics. Why doesn't anyone ever say that about archery? Curling takes at least as much athletic ability as archery, and probably more.

ice dancing sucks.

We shouldn't criticize the athleticism of sports athletes dedicate their lives to if we don't have any experience competing in them. I am competitive in archery so I know first hand how much athleticism archery requires. Try pulling a bow 50lbs with three fingers and holding still while aiming at a target 70m away. Try it then get back to me.

What a waste of energy.

Hey I was wondering what the best hunting stab is w/ out sacrificing to much of "pokeage" coming of the bow....a stab that seems to do it all and will work for deer hunting, some turkey hunting(blind) and some 3d...thanks guys

Excellent article. I believe that if more people tried bow hunting, they would be surprised how much fun this can be. I invite you and your readers to visit my new site, Silent Draw Outdoors. This is a new breed of hunting and outdoor adventure. Watch bow archery hunting videos of big game in North America.

Im no expert, but I think you just made an excellent point. You obviously know what youre talking about, and I can really get behind that. Thanks for being so upfront and so honest.
