Weekend box office: 'Shutter Island' stays on top

Shutter-Island-Leonardo-DiCaprio-320.jpg"Shutter Island" kept its hold on the box-office crown for a second straight weekend, holding off new releases "Cop Out" and "The Crazies."

Despite snow in the Northeast that looked like it was keeping people away from theaters on Friday, the Leonardo DiCaprio/Martin Scorsese thriller managed to earn $22 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates. That's a drop of 46 percent from its $41 million opening last weekend -- not ideal but hardly terrible either -- and has earned $75.1 million total so far.

"Cop Out," the buddy cop comedy starring Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis, earned $18.6 million for second place, while "The Crazies" raked in an estimated $16.5 million for third (it also had a higher per-screen average of $6,670 to "Cop Out's" $5,894).

The two new releases bumped "Avatar" ($14 million) down to fourth place -- but the movie did cross the $700 million mark over the weekend. "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" earned an estimated $9.8 million to round out the top five. "Valentine's Day" ($9.5 million) fell from second to sixth place, but it did cross the $100 million threshold.

The rest of the top 10: "Dear John" ($5 million), "The Wolfman" ($4.1 million), "The Tooth Fairy" ($3.45 million) and "Crazy Heart" ($2.5 million).

"Shutter Island" remains the top destination for movie-goers.

Wow, Pae. Quite the observant one, aren't we?

I saw Edge of Darkness today. It was terrible. Well, ok, not terrible, but it left a lot to be desired. I'd say a 5.5 out of 10.
