TV ratings: 'American Idol' wins Wednesday, 'Modern Family' strong

ellen-degeneres-idol-hollywood-320.jpgFast National ratings for Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010

"American Idol" took its usual spot at the top of Wednesday's ratings, but ABC's comedy "Modern Family" posted some of its best ratings of the season opposite "Idol" -- though that didn't carry over to its companion show, "Cougar Town."

"The Middle" also had a better-than-average night for ABC, while FOX's "Human Target" held up reasonably well without an "Idol" lead-in. And NBC began its post-Jay Leno era at 10 o'clock with a "Law & Order: SVU" rerun that outdrew Leno's average Wednesday performance.

FOX drew 17 million viewers and a 9.4 rating/14 share for the night, beating CBS (12.15 million, 7.4/12) by a comfortable margin. ABC (7 million, 4.2/7) came in third. NBC's 5.7 million viewers and 3.9/6 was good for fourth, while another night of reruns on The CW (1.1 million, 0.7/1) trailed. (Note: Some stations pre-empted programming for coverage of the blizzard on the East Coast, which could affect final numbers.)

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 6.0 rating almost doubled the 3.3 for second-place CBS. ABC, 2.6, took third, followed by NBC, 1.6, and The CW, 0.6.

I wonder how ABC's executives feel now about renewing Cougar Town...

Was claiming to have had a great year when the year was very disappointing worth being stranded with a show in free fall while all your marketing muscle is used to try and keep Modern Family's head above water (in a move reminiscent of NBC's failed attempts at propping The Office up to become a tentpole for its Thursdays).

Speaking of NBC, Mercy is also doing poorly, a fact that is no loger disguised by the extreme weakness of the timeslot for the other networks.

Somebody might be ableto explain why CW persists in all those Gossip Girl re-runs. Do they really not realize that outside of their PR releases nobody watches re-runs of that show?

Great :( Rena's back

Betty was so great ABC decided to cancel it,....lol

Rena quit Street Teaming for CBS and you cannot bully me either!!!

Pour Koogar Tawn cant ceep en oddiance from it'S leed in. Kitty ain't got no claws. Purrhaps Courtney nneds to do yoda ... Meuw any iders or hints?

Rena, those exec's are doing better than you, and I am sure are smarter. So just shut up, no one cares about you negativity. Just go back to your paralegal job in NV.

ABC’s sitcoms The Middle and Modern Family saw increases from last week, with The Middle reaching a 3.0 rating with adults 18-49, a series high. Modern Family matched it previous highs with adults 18-49.

The Middle vs. Cougar Town seems like a silly discussion to me. The Middle, doesn’t have to air against American Idol and Cougar Town does. Still the steep drop from Modern Family to Cougar Town is notable (4.2 to 2.8).

ahhh how sweet I got my first stalker but it's too bad I won't be their Valentine:(

So let me get this straight. It is ok with ABC that "Cougar Town" performs poorly every week. But when they screw around with Ugly Betty and it does poorly they cancel it. Maybe those guys who are running the show at ABC need to join up with NBC's idiots.

@JFC
Because Rena is a no-nothing who thinks she knows it all that is why we like to mess with her plus I get a dollar every time Rena calls someone a Street Teamer!!!!!!
