TV ratings: 'American Idol' falls, but FOX still leads Wednesday

ryan-seacrest-idol-season-9-320.jpgFast National ratings for Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010

The final audition episode of "American Idol" drew the show's smallest audience so far this season, but it was just big enough to let FOX hold off CBS for the ratings lead.

FOX drew 14.3 million viewers and an 8.2 rating/13 share in households for the night, beating out CBS' 13.4 million and 8.3/14. ABC (6.3 million, 4.0/7) was a good bit off the pace in third. NBC (4.85 million, 3.3/5) took fourth, while yet another night of repeats on The CW (928,000, 0.6/1) brought up the rear.

FOX's lead among adults 18-49 was a little wider. It scored a 5.0 in the demographic, topping CBS' 3.4. ABC, 2.5, came in third, followed by NBC, 1.2, and The CW, 0.4.

Craig O: Get some manners. And learn how to spell. Talk about ignorant ...

ABC will be bankrupt with one year. The CEOS are ruining what use to be be a good network. For years now since they canceled NYPD Blue they have had bad dramas and no crime shows to speak of. All studies show a network has to have good and hard hitting crime shows such as the CBS model. I hope ABC survives but I doubt they will.

Jay Leno Beats Ugly Betty

The Human Target continues to do well, good to see people watching good shows.

It's no surprise that American Idol has been dropping in the ratings. People are probably pissed at how the "bad" auditions are so obviously actors hired by the show and how some of the exchanges between the judges and contestants are scripted. They better abandon this practice immediately if they hope to retain the diminished audience they currently have.

Losing paula and adding degenerate will eventually kill idol.

ABC's comedy block performed magnificently. Nearly 7 million viewers for a MF repeat, followed by steady groth for The Middle and a huge audience for a new Modern Family(against idol) at 9pm and spectacular demo number for it(3.9) and CougarTown(2.9) indicate Idol has no effect at all on MF and little effect on CougarTown. Face the facts. Idol lost 5 million viewers from Tuesday to Wednesday. I bet ABC execs are blushing and grining from ear to ear today.

" THE MIDDLE" IS A FUNNY SHOW-THE KIDS ARE GREAT ACTORS! AND PAT HEATON FROM "RAYMOND" IS GREAT ,ALSO.GIVE IT A WATCH.

I really hope Human Target starts to pick up more steam by actually staying in 1 time slot instead of being moved around all over the place.

Human Target is garnering much smaller audiences with Idol as a lead-out than as a lead-in (big surprise there) and is probably hurting Idol a bit. It looks like FOX hasn't found a new hit yet again. :(

Will CW read the writing on the wall about Gossip Girl? ;)

At NBC, Mercy is their biggest new show... which is quite sad. :(

At ABC Mercy is still riding on the constant PR campaign, but shows its limitations with poor repeat numbers (so it beats Mercy... it just says volumes about Mercy). Ugly Betty of course keeps showing why it was foolhardy (but so nice for fans) to renew it one last season.

The only positive spot is CSI:NY, which is actually doing better than in years past, benefiting probably from the lack of network competition.
