'Supernatural': Will a sixth season compromise the integrity of the series?

supernatural-320.jpg

The CW announced the sixth season renewal of "Supernatural" Tuesday morning (Feb. 16), an occasion which you might assume would make the series' diehard fans happy.

That, however, isn't exactly the case.

Many viewers, loyal to the show's mythology, seem to feel that because the series was always meant to tell a story that spanned five seasons, a sixth year will be doing "Supernatural" a disservice.

Knowing that "Supernatural" will be back next year means the stakes of the upcoming apocalyptic battle between Dean/Michael vs. Sam/Lucifer have decreased significantly. Sure, creator Eric Kripke has killed off a ton of characters in the past, but there's no way he's going to have one of the Winchester brothers die when the series will be back for at least one more season. "Supernatural" has been building to this epic battle for years, but now that we know this season won't be the show's last, some fans feel like they're getting cheated.

Then again, others may think another year of Sam and Dean is nothing but a good thing. Especially since Kripke has agreed to stay on as show runner and says he has more stories to tell.

Where do you stand?

Weigh in...

UPDATE 5:45 p.m.: Though both the network and the studio declined to comment, sources now confirm that though Kripke will stay on as an executive producer, he will not stay on as show runner for "Supernatural" season 6.

Most people I know are totally happy about a sixth season and so am I.

"Will a sixth season compromise the integrity of the series?" Nooooooo, because if you don't like the direction of season 6, don't watch, just let it end with season 5 and if you like it, you watch it. No need to call for cancellation if you don't like it!
A new season is a new possibility for different non-apocalypse story directions. Cheated? Are you kidding? Kripke said he will tell the story he originally intended to tell and then start a new chapter.

I totally agree with Cassi. I trust that Eric Kriple wouldn't have agreed to another season if he did not feel he could deliver creatively. I'm excited to see how this five season mythology will end and to see where season 6 will take us!

As long as they keep Misha, I'll be happy. Misha is such a great actor who brought something new and very interesting to SN. I can't go back to recycling S1.

This is very likely a mistake made by dozens of shows before it  €“ extending the run that does, inevitably, sacrifice integrity. I'm sure Kripke believes he can deliver creatively, and perhaps he will for a time, but when a series has a clear mythology with a story end in place, in my experience it always serves the characters better and lends the show more justice if the series ends when originally intended. All good things must come to an end, after all, so it might as well be a strong one.

I always think it works better for a show from a storytelling point of view if it is able to conclude on a set story arc. Even if Kripke says he has more stories to tell, he may have just come up with the ideas when the executives wanted to know what he would pitch if given a sixth season. Adding on stories after you've already concluded the vision you had almost never goes well. It provides more money for the network and the cast/crew, but creatively, probably not the best idea.

Ok, don't get me wrong: I LOVE Sam and Dean. But still I wish that this would be the last season. A new arc? I don't buy it. And the argument for if I don't like season 6 I can just not watch doesn't hold, I would still KNOW there's another season which will ruin the end of season 5... Whatever it is.

There will always be demons and ghosts for them to go after and destroy. I'll never get tired of watching the Winchesters.

I don't see any reason for Supernatural to end after Season 5. Kripke et al have done a fantastic job over the last four and a half seasons, and I have no doubt that Season 6 will be every bit as good as what we've had so far.

The way I see it is lets wait and see what happens with the end of Season 5 since all for all we know Kripke could end it with so many possibilities of Dean having to get Sam out of Hell, Dean having to care of Sam after being ridden by Lucifer and the list of possibilies could go on but we all know that with as much as Sam and Dean aren't seeing eye to eye they are still going to be there for one another so really who knows and if someone is that worried about season 6 messing with Supernatural like Cassi said don't watch... until someone tells you otherwise.

Does season 6 compromise the original integrity of the show? Yes. Will I still watch? Yes. Because thankfully Kripke is sticking with the show and I have faith he will give us something interesting to watch play out...even though I wish his original wishes to end the show/arc in season 5 would have been respected.
