'Lost' premiere gets a big DVR bump

terry-oquinn2-lost-s6-320.jpgThe season premiere of "Lost" got a sizable ratings boost from DVR use, improving by better than 2 million viewers and more than a full point in adults 18-49.

The live-plus-7 boost isn't that big a surprise -- "Lost" routinely added a sizable chunk of viewers during its fifth season. But the gains in both viewers (from 12.13 million to 14.33 million) and the 18-49 demo (5.6 to 6.7) are the biggest ever for the show's season premiere in both raw numbers and percentage gain (also no surprise, since DVR use is growing year by year).

The additional 18-49 audience also makes "Lost" the No. 1 scripted show in the demographic for the week of Feb. 1-7 (it still trails the post-Super Bowl premiere of "Undercover Boss" and the two "American Idol" telecasts" that week).

Other DVR highlights from the first week of February:

- "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Mentalist" finished in a near-tie for the most-DVR'ed show of the week. "Grey's" added 2,758,000 viewers and "The Mentalist" 2,757,000. The two Thursday-night shows are also the season's leaders in viewers added, with "The Mentalist" (2.93 million) holding a small edge over "Grey's" (2.91 million).

- On the demographic side for the week, "Grey's Anatomy" added 1.4 ratings points (4.5 to 5.9), followed by "The Office" (3.8 to 5.1) and "House" (4.8 to 6.0). The Feb. 3 "American Idol" and "Modern Family," like "Lost," each added 1.1 points.

- For the season, "Idol" is adding an average of 2.2 million viewers to its Tuesday broadcast and 2.5 million to the Wednesday show -- gains of 8 percent and 10 percent over their same-day ratings.

- NBC's "Chuck" is averaging a bump of 1.17 million viewers (6.94 million to 8.11 million) and a half a point (2.5 to 3.0) in adults 18-49. Both represent gains of just under 17 percent over the same-day ratings.

- The now-canceled "Dollhouse" remains the season's biggest percentage gainer, adding nearly 36 percent to its same-day audience. That bump (2.17 million viewers to 2.95 million), however, still wasn't enough to break the 3 million mark or for FOX to keep the show around.

You have to DVR LOST, sometimes it's so damn confusing you have to watch it twice.

1) I never watch ANYTHING live -- why spend an hour watching a show when you can spend 42 minutes watching it instead?

2) Lost does, indeed, require review of all or portions of episodes on a regular basis.

3) With Lost, I have been watching the DVR'd episodes the same day, but I often prefer to save up three or four episodes of a show and spend a whole evening just watching one show. I find that more satisfying, and it also helps keep storylines fresh in my mind. If I had the patience, I'd only watch shows on DVD, but I can't usually wait that long to see my favorite shows.

I hate to say this so advertisers see and get a clue, but I have to DVR Lost because there are so many commercial breaks it's pathetic. So I record it and start watching 20 minutes into it. I also by the DVD's so I can rewatch with all the extra features. But the advertising is just way to ridiculous.

How does a DVR know if I'm watching a show. Sometimes I'll watch a show that gets recorded live, so I'll just delete it at some point after that. Other times I'll record a show, and a month later I'll realize I won't watch it ever, so I'll delete it. How can a DVR possibly know the difference between these two scenarios? I'm sure there are a lot of people that will occasionally watch a DRVed show when it is live.

Not having a DVR, I love it when ABC runs two hours of LOST both last weeks and then new one. Definitely have to see it at least twice before I catch everything. (at least I think it's everything;)
