'Lost': 'Orientation: Ryan Station' talks about 'The Substitute' with special guest Alan Sepinwall

ryan dharma station 4 leaf clover.jpgWe're back with another edition of "Orientation: Ryan Station." As always, Maureen Ryan from the Chicago Tribune and I met up on the interwebs to talk the latest episode of "Lost." This time, however, she brought along a special guest: Alan Sepinwall of the New Jersey Star-Ledger and "What's Alan Watching?" Getting to talk with one of my favorite television critics about my favorite show? Awesome. Getting to talk with two of them at once? Even better.

The plan, as always: watch the latest episode of "Lost" via Hulu from our respective locales around the country and talk about what we're watching. Think of these as insta-audio commentaries about "Lost": no need to wait for the DVDs to come out, people! We're living in an instant gratification society, people! Mo, Alan, and myself spent nearly an hour discussing the finer points of "The Substitute" while giving our thoughts on "Lost" as a whole for your listening pleasure.

I've embedded the episode on Hulu below, with the audio commentary just below that. We intro for about 1:50, then get into the episode itself. Enjoy!

I got to thinking about what you said about the possible end games, and now I'm wondering if BOTH Jacob and MIB haven'ts been manipulators the whole time, and that al la Babylon 5, the Losties will tell them BOTH to get stuffed, and that the sideways timeline is how things would have played out had there been no manipulation and all the Losties made their own life choices. I'm not 100% convinced that's the end game, but it's another possibility.

This episode reminded me a little bit of "The Brig" with Locke leading Sawyer, and manipulating him.

I LOVE these podcasts :)

Alas ... Hulu not so good for your not-in-the-U.S. fans. :D

Eh... I've listened to both of these so far and find them to be solidly passable.

I have no love lost for Maureen Ryan who is frequently controlling, combative and confrontational to her readers on her blog, yet even were that not a factor, I can't say the podcast format feels to be adequate for you guys at all.

Video commentaries are a peculiar breed... To re-watch an entire episode with people talking over it is quite a commitment to ask out of someone both time and attention-wise, and one really can only justify that when said people are either A) the original creators of the video, B) unusually funny or C) amazingly insightful... None of which I feel I'm getting here. I just feel, for the material that was delivered, a written article would have been a lot more appropriate.

Now before the children come along to toss me the usual response of "Well if you don't like it don't listen to it then!!", well, I had to listen to it at least a couple times to form an opinion on it, but now, yes, I do plan to stop listening.

For those who have listened and enjoyed, more power to 'em, and by all means continue.

Enry, I think the idea is to provide a venue for hardcore fans to geek out to their hearts' content and to encourage informed, intelligent discussion about the show. Lots of fans crave this kind of in-depth analysis. Especially during these final episodes when all the pieces are (hopefully) coming together. In that context, these guys definitely deliver.

I thought it was great! :) It was exactly what I wanted. It was amusing, informative and not boring at all.
My only beef with the podcast was how echo-y Mo Ryan got half way through and then Alan Sepinwall's mic got on the echo train, too. That will get old fast. Hope y'all find a way to fix that prob!
Great work!

I was disappointed. I thought the purpose of having the hulu embedded was that the narrators would be commenting on what was happening - and that was very sparse. I would rather all the rambling would be in a separate podcast.

Don't listen to the those haters, Ryan! Plenty of us are loving these podcasts. :)

Nobody outside the US can see/hear these podcasts. Are these available on itunes or anywhere else? Come on, Ryan - let the rest of us into the party...

Kas, download the episode on torrent (Which I have, in HD :))

Or use this FREE proxy program Hotspot shield.
I'm in the Uk as well and I can watch Hulu and other US only sites.
