'Jay Leno,' 'TBL' win worst-of-TV Bennie Awards

beautiful-life-320.jpg"The Beautiful Life," formerly just a footnote to the 2009-10 TV season, is now a bona fide award winner.

OK, so the award is for 2009's worst TV, but still. "TBL" and "The Jay Leno Show" were big winners in the inaugural Bennie Awards, a competition that aims to do for television what the Razzies do for movies. The awards are voted on by the readers of Hollywood blog The Temp Diaries and are named in honor of former NBC chief Ben Silverman, the man who gave us "Knight Rider," "American Gladiators" and "The Chopping Block."

(We'd also encourage you to read the transcript of the awards show -- hosted by Billy Crystal!* -- at the link above. Good stuff.)

[*Not really.]

Your 2009 Bennie Awards winners are:

Worst scripted program: "The Beautiful Life: TBL" (Nominees: "Accidentally on Purpose," "Eastwick," "Melrose Place," "The Forgotten")

Worst actress: Ashlee Simpson, "Melrose Place" (Nominees: Courteney Cox, "Cougar Town"; Jenna Elfman, "Accidentally on Purpose"; Arianna Huffington, "The Cleveland Show"; Ellen Pompeo, "Grey's Anatomy")

Worst actor:
The Jonas Brothers, "JONAS" (Nominees: Kelsey Grammer, "Hank"; Chris O'Donnell, "NCIS: Los Angeles"; Charlie Sheen, "Two and a Half Men"; Scott Wolf, "V")

Worst unscripted show: "The Jay Leno Show" (Nominees: "The Biggest Loser," "The Hills," "Jersey Shore," Playboy TV's "Sam's Game")

Worst reality/unscripted personality, female: Snooki, "Jersey Shore" (Nominees: Daisy, "Daisy of Love"; Kim Kardashian, "Keeping Up with the Kardashians"; Jillian Michaels, "The Biggest Loser"; Heidi Montag, "The Hills")

Worst reality/unscripted personality, male: Jay Leno, "The Jay Leno Show" (Nominees: Jon Gosselin, "Jon & Kate Plus 8"; Jimmy Kimmel, "Jimmy Kimmel Live"; Spencer Pratt, "The Hills"; Mike (The Situation), "Jersey Shore"

This is a funny eye opener, a lot of the stuff listed here are things that I watch.

I know they're bad but I watch it anyway.

surprised TBL won after only 3 aired episodes. I would have bet good money that "Accidentally on Purpose" would win this.

I'm glad to see this. Hopefully the Bennies will become as big as the Razzies. Bad TV needs to be called out as much as good TV, especially in the age of reality TV. Only nomination I disagree with is the guy on V. I don't recall him being that bad.

I'm so happy that I do not watch any of these shows. Does that mean I have good taste?

thetempdiaries.com give me a break who ever heard of that, seems like they hate just to hate, come on jimmy kimmel over jimmy fallon

That's a revealing comment, Lauren. Not just about you but about the general viewing public. The excuse "I know it's bad but I watch it anyways" reveals a cynical loss of expectation in today's audiences. Why do we, the viewing audience, have to lower our standards for the crap we see on tv? Shouldn't it be the networks' job to make GOOD entertainment for us?

A very good point, Rich -- and invalidates viewer complaints about the lack of good tv given the the sh*t that viewers tune into in droves.

The only shows i watch is cleveland show two and a half men and V.

Well said Terrence.

Wow, Jay Leno had some SERIOUS competition in both the show and the "male" categories. Glad to know he stood out above the rest of the pack.

Sad to see that Past Life didn't make the cut for worst scripted program, though.
