'Hurt Locker,' 'Up in the Air' win Writers Guild awards

hurt-locker-02-320.jpg"Up in the Air" and "The Hurt Locker" took home top honors at the Writers Guild of America awards.

The Oscar-nominated screenplays both defeated some tough competition to win their respective categories Saturday (Feb. 20).

Mark Boal, a journalist turned screenwriter, was lauded for his best original screenplay for "The Hurt Locker," about a special unit that defuses bombs in Iraq.

Boal beat out  the screenwriters for "(500) Days of Summer," "Avatar," "The Hangover" and "A Serious Man."

"Up in the Air," by Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, took home the best adapted screenplay award. It had gone up against "Crazy Heart," "Julie & Julia," "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and "Star Trek."

Finally, "The Cove" by Mark Monroe won the best documentary screenplay award.

How was Avatar even nominated?

I don't think either of these were surprise wins at the Writers Guild Awards. They were both deserving. I'm surprised we didn't see more wins for Up in the Air at the other award shows. I think we will see good things for both films come Oscar time in a couple weeks.
