David Letterman, Jay Leno and Oprah's secret Super Bowl party

Late-night rivals David Letterman and Jay Leno came together for a Super Bowl truce of sorts, but it wasn't easy.

According to the LA Times, the logistics of shooting the commercial played out like an espionage flick.

Leno secretly boarded a flight to New York on Tuesday (Feb. 2), sneaked into the Ed Sullivan Theater and dressed in his best undercover gear: fake mustache, sunglasses and hoodie.

The secret was kept from most of the CBS and NBC staff. Naturally, however, Oprah Winfrey was in the know since she also makes an appearance as a mediator of sorts between the her fellow hosts.

The "Late Show" promo was written by Letterman himself.

It was a shock. Best ad. LOL

I loved it. I wonder how NBC executives feel though since Leno is promoting his competition? This would be like the contestants on The Biggest L0ser talking about how much they love American Idol (which airs at the same time as The Biggest Loser).

when was this filmed

it sorta gives leno publicity but he is kinda shooting his own foot by showing almost 100 million people o watch letterman

i think he will use this as an excuse cause he knows his show will fail

or this was filmed before he got his old job bak effecitvely stabbing conan in th back that is of course if conan was still on the air

BTW of course it was written by letterman it was funny.

I agree the ad was a total shock. I had to watch it again on line before I could believe it. Well done gentlemen and Oprah. Enough of all this fighting.

Suberbowladjunkie, if you are an example of an ex-CoCo watcher no wonder he didn't do that well. You can't even read! The writer said that the ad was taped on Feb. 2nd, that would be AFTER Conan left. Jay is going back to competing directly with Letterman, no excuses are needed. It's called a peace offering you moron.

I don't think it hurts Leno much, if at all, to do this. A superbowl ad on the rival network seen by quadruple millions more people than would see a Jay Leno ad on NBC. He comes off looking like a good sport....AND to a certain extent promotes his own show in the process.

I think that Letterman enjoys the publicity gives, and Leno ends up looking good by finally providing levity to the situation that played out. I also think Letterman and Leno both win, since this will bring an audience to both late night shows. Great job by all!

@ suberbowladjunkie

1. If 1 ad (super bowl or not) can sink a show, then the show wasn't going to succeed anyways.

2. According to the article + LA Times it was filmed around Feb 2.

**** leno ! Letterman funny .

Jay - always a class act. Letterman - let the competition begin!! Both of you are true gentlemen - may you both live long and prosper and keep entertaining us!

Leno did it just to reimage his sorry butt to the world. What a poser
